CONWAY, S.C. – Highlighted by a pair of two-RBI hits and senior
Alex Heinen's solo homer, the Boston University softball team concluded Coastal Carolina's Kickin' Chicken Classic with an 8-2 win over Rider at St. John Stadium.
Finishing with 10 hits, the Terriers improve to 2-3, while the Broncs remained winless at 0-5. Sophomore
Ali DuBois (1-0) collected her first win of the season by tallying five strikeouts against just one hit allowed through four scoreless innings of work. Heinen, senior
Alexa Ponce and senior
Emily Morrow collected two RBIs apiece to help lead the offense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With two outs in the top of the first, Heinen singled to right, advanced to second on freshman Aliyah Huerta-Leipner's walk and then scored on Ponce's two-RBI double down the left field line.
- After stranding two on base in the second, BU tallied four runs off three hits and three walks, all with two outs, in the top of the fourth.
- Freshman Nicole Amodio, sophomore Jen Horita and freshman Emily Gant all drew a walk to load the bases.
- Morrow delivered a two-RBI single up the middle and was followed by consecutive BI singles from Heinen and Huerta-Leipner for the 6-0 advantage.
- Rider broke up the no-hit bid in the bottom half with a lead-off single, as DuBois ended the inning with two swinging strikeouts.
- Senior Analisa Ruff hit an RBI single in the fifth to plate freshman Izzy Antonelli, and Heinen followed with a solo homer in the sixth to extend the lead to 8-0.
- The Broncs avoided the shutout with two runs off three combined hits against junior Lizzie Annerino and freshman Julia Handfield in the bottom of the sixth.
- BU stranded the bases loaded in the seventh, but the Terriers did not need any more runs, as Handfield sealed the victory by inducing three ground outs.
