BOSTON – Concluding a road trip to South Carolina, the Boston University softball team will compete in four games starting Friday morning at the Upstate Classic. The Terriers were originally scheduled to compete in five combined contests against UConn, Virginia Tech, Bowling Green and host USC Upstate but the event was changed due to expected weather delays and the Hokies' exit from the event.
The tournament will now start at 9 a.m. against UConn and will follow with an 11 a.m. matchup with Bowling Green. On Saturday, the Terriers will battle Bowling Green at 11 a.m. and then the Spartans at 1 p.m. Sunday's competition has been canceled.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU went 2-3 this past weekend with two wins over Rider by a combined score of 16-2 with losses to No. 8 Tennessee (4-0), Illinois-Chicago (4-3) and Coastal Carolina (6-0).
- Sophomore Ali DuBois (1-0, 1.26 ERA) was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday for the fourth time in he career by tallying 15 strikeouts in 16.2 combined innings while holding opponents to .215.
- Freshman Emily Gant (1-2, 1.45 EA) tallied seven strikeouts in 9.2 innings and earned a five-inning shutout win against Rider while holding opponents to .182.
- BU batted .297 in five games with opponents hitting just .213, but the Terriers committed 10 total errors to allow nine unearned runs.
- Senior Emily Morrow went 8-of-17 (.471) with a team-high five RBis alongside senior Alex Heinen (.313 avg.), who earned the Terriers' first homer of the season in the second win against Rider.
- Sophomore Jen Horita, senior Alexa Ponce, sophomore Marina Sylvestri and freshman Aliyah Huerta-Leipner all tallied at least four hits apiece and combined for eight runs scored.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
UConn, 3-1 (Friday, 9 a.m.)
- The Huskies are 3-1 to start the season following a pair of wins over Bryant (11-0, 3-0) and 3-2 victory against Michigan State ... The lone loss was a 7-0 defeat to tournament host Florida International.
- UConn went 20-35 last season with a 6-1 upset win over then-No. 7 Texas A&M while claiming a 6-10 mark in the American Conference ... The Huskies are lead by fifth-year head coach Jen McIntyre, who was an associate head coach at BU for one year in 2014 following 12 seasons at Penn State.
- As a team, the Huskies batted .252 with seven doubles while holding opponents to a .191 average.
- Kiwi McDaniel hit 6-of-12 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Carli Cutler batted .333 with four RBIs.
- UConn had three pitchers start at least one game last weekend, combining for 31 strikeouts in 25.0 innings of work ... Jill Stockley last season posted a 2.40 ERA and 10-14 record with one shutout while holding opponents to .244 batting average, while Katie Koshes posted a 3.79 ERA, 4-9 record, .241 opposing batting average and 84 strikeouts in 77.2 innings.
- BU is 9-8 all-time in the series, last claiming a 3-1 home victory in 2014 ... The teams last met in a neutral setting in 2010 at Hofstrar when the Terriers won both contests.
Bowling Green, 0-0 (Friday, 11 a.m. | Saturday, 11 a.m.)
- The Falcons are opening their season this weekend after posting a 26-26 record and 8-14 mark in the Mid-American Conference.
- BGSU batted .286 with 37-27 advantage in homers while holding opponents to .241.
- Alex Sorgin is the top returning hitter at .322 with 20 stolen bases and 33 runs scored ... Kali Holcomb hit .302 with eight homers and team-high 46 RBIs.
- Meredith Miller (14-15, 2.94 ERA) recorded 151 strikeouts in 171.1 innings with opponents hitting .237 ... Brooke Parker (10-8, 3.26 ERA) tallied three saves with opponents hitting .252.
- The teams are tied, 1-1, with both contests taking place in Tampa, Florida ... BU posted a win in 2007 (5-4) to avenge a 2000 loss (1-0).
USC Upstate, 3-1 (Saturday, 1 p.m.)
- The Spartans went 3-1 at home last weekend with victories over Youngstown State, Towson and Miami (Ohio) by a combined score of 11-6 and a 3-1 loss to East Carolina ... The Atlantic Sun runner-up went 35-19 with a 10-6 conference mark.
- USC Upstate hit .284 over four games while posting a 16-0 advantage in stolen bases.
- Brittany Case hit .500 with three runs scored, while Alyssa Oakes hit .444 with two homers and four RBIs.
- Christina Biggerstaff (2-0, 0.54 ERA) posted 23 strikeouts against six walks and four hits in 13.0 innings, while Erin Hill (1-1, 0.60 ERA) tallied six strikeouts in 11.2 innings.
- In 2012 when the Spartans were receiving votes, BU pulled out a 4-2 victory in Clearwater, Florida.
