BOSTON – Despite
Riley Childs earning her first-career double-double and
Payton Hauck posting a game-high 18 points, the Boston University women's basketball team came up just short to Holy Cross, 64-61, on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
Down by as many as 13, the Terriers (12-11, 8-5 PL) had an opportunity to send the game to overtime, but
Lauren Spearman's 3-point attempt was slightly off as time expired. Childs posted 11 points and a personal-best 13 rebounds, while Hauck went 7-of-13 from the field and 4-of-4 at the charity stripe. Both Lauren Manis and Megan Swords had double-doubles to help the Crusaders improve to 15-9 and 7-6 in conference play.
How It Happened

- The Crusaders used a 14-8 run over the final six minutes of the opening frame to take a one-point lead.
- Holy Cross kept the momentum on its side, starting the second quarter with a 12-0 streak to take a 13-point lead with 4:22 left before the half
- Spearman got BU back on the board before Naiyah Thompson delivered seven straight points to make it a four-point game, 29-25.
- After a 3-pointer by the Crusaders, Childs hit a jumper in the paint to put the deficit back within two possessions, 32-27, heading into the half.
- Holy Cross went up by nine until Thompson converted on an and-1, while Hauck put in four straight points, but the Crusaders put the scoreboard in its favor at 45-37 at the end of the third quarter.
- From there, Holy Cross looked like it put the game out of reach by pushing the score to 58-45 with 3:13 left.
- However, the Terriers chipped away at the deficit, making it a two-possession game again with 1:20 left after a Katie Nelson triple.
- Nelson put in another make from beyond-the-arc with 49 seconds left to cut the gap to 61-59, though the Terriers wouldn't get closer as Holy Cross completed the season sweep.
