Oettinger Collects Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week Honor
February 25, 2019 | Men's Ice Hockey
WAKEFIELD, Mass. - For the second time this season, junior goaltender Jake Oettinger has been named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Oettinger stopped 48 of the 49 shots he faced in a weekend sweep at Vermont to help the Terriers claim four important points in the Hockey East standings. He shared the weekly honor with Maine goaltender Jeremy Swayman, who backstopped the Black Bears to a sweep of Maine.
On Friday, Oettinger stopped all 29 UVM shots he faced to collect his third shutout of the season and the 12th of his career, one off the school record. A first-period power-play goal on Saturday by the Catamounts was the only shot to get past Oettinger on the weekend and it ended his shutout skein at 131:24, just short of his personal record of 135:14, which was set his freshman year.
With his impressive performances, Oettinger raised his season save percentage to .926, which ranks third among Hockey East netminders and 10th in the nation. He continued his dominance of Vermont as he now has a 4-1-1 record against them in six starts with a .970 save percentage and a 0.82 goals-against average.
Oettinger heads into Thursday's big matchup at No. 8 Providence having not allowed an even-strength goal in over 184 minutes.
