Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bucknell Holds Off Men's Basketball, 82-76

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Seeking its first-ever sweep against two-time defending Patriot League champion Bucknell, the Boston University men's basketball team flushed 10 3-pointers and featured a double-double by junior Max Mahoney but came up just short, 82-76, on Saturday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion.

The Bison (16-8, 10-2 PL) had two double-doubles and 10 treys as well to avenge an earlier 87-80 road loss to the Terriers (11-14, 4-8 PL). Nate Sestina recorded 25 points and game-high 11 rebounds, while Bruce Moore posted 10 points and 10 boards to help offset Mahoney's 16 points and 10 boards. Both sophomore Javante McCoy (19 pts.) and junior Tyler Scanlon (16 pts.) reached double figures for BU, but Kimbal Mackenzie recorded 20 points to boost Bucknell's offensive production.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sestina drained two 3-pointers to help the Bison jump out to 12-4 lead at 16:24, and John Meeks added two more to extend the lead to 24-11 at 12:15.
  • Facing a 27-14 deficit with 11:04 remaining, sophomore Andrew Petcash drained a 3-pointer to spark a 10-0 run capped by McCoy's bomb at 8:14.
  • Redshirt-freshman Alex Vilarino added another one at 4:53 and was shortly thereafter followed by McCoy's jumper, as BU grabbed its first lead, 32-31, with 3:27 left in the half.
  • Petcash and Scanlon hit two more in the final minute to give the Terriers a 40-36 halftime lead.
  • McCoy opened the second half with BU's seventh bomb for its largest lead of the game, and sophomore Sukhmail Mathon kept the margin the same at 18:50 (45-38) on a layup.
  • Sestina though flushed another of his four 3-pointers on the ensuing possession to ignite a 21-6 run capped two Moore free throws at 8:32.
  • Mahoney scored seven straight for BU to cut the deficit to 63-60 at 6:19, but the Bison came right back with an 8-0 spurt to push the lead back to double-digits, 71-60.
  • Facing a 79-67 deficit with 1:25 left, the Terriers used three McCoy bombs to pull within four at 17 seconds, but the Bison followed with two free throws to seal the win.
GAME NOTES
  • Mahoney claimed his fifth double-double of the season to extend his career total to six.
  • McCoy's five 3-pointers were a career high, as he finished two shy of his personal best in points (21 at Lehigh and vs. Lafayette in 2018).
  • BU started the game 7-of-12 from behind the arc but went 1-of-10 in the second half before McCoy drained three treys in the final 80 seconds.
  • The Bison shot 56.7 FG% in the second half while holding the Terriers to 32.4 FG%.
  • BU's bench was outscored in back-to-back games for the first time this season, as the Bison posted an 18-12 advantage.
  • The Terriers outscored Bucknell off turnovers (10-6) and in the paint (30-28).
  • After the road team won both matchups last regular season, the home team prevailed both times this year with Bucknell moving to 13-5 all-time in the series.
NEXT UP: ARMY WEST POINT
  • The Terriers will visit the Black Knights on Wednesday (Feb. 13) with an 11 a.m. start time.
  • Army won the first meeting, 86-82, back on Jan. 9.
  • BU prevailed, 61-59, in its last visit to West Point.
