No. 1 Boston College Outmatches Women's Lacrosse, 20-6, in Season Opener

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Squaring off at the home of the top-ranked team in the nation, Boston College outmatched the Boston University women's lacrosse team, 20-6, in its season opener Saturday afternoon at the Newton Soccer & Lacrosse Field.

Ava Barry and Kelly Mathews led the Terriers with two goals apiece, while Kaitlin Belval and Molly Kern also found the back of the net. 
 
How It Happened
  • Boston College scored just 34 seconds into the game, sparking a 6-0 run over the first eight minutes.
  • Barry snapped the run by burying a feed from Mathews at the 10-minute mark.
  • The sophomore followed with her second strike, this time taking it solo, with 13:44 to go before the break.
  • Belval and Kelly Mathews went for back-to-back strikes within a 46-second span to make it an 11-4 game at the break.
  • Seven different Eagles got on the board to guide a 9-0 run to start the second half of action.
  • Kern sent in a feed from Catherine McAuley with four minutes left before Mathews netted the final score of the day with 11 ticks left.
Game Notes
  • Freshman Kennady Smith made her first career start in net, marking the first time a rookie has earned the starting nod in net for the Terriers since Caroline Meegan in 2014.
  • Riley Kokoruda also earned a starting nod at the midfield, while Maddie MacMaster and Hannah Kenneally saw the field for their collegiate debuts.
  • Belval led the Terriers in ground balls (3) and draw controls (2).

  • The Terriers will be back in action next Saturday, Feb. 16 as part of a Nickerson Field doubleheader.
