Terriers Send Four Matches to Third Set in 6-1 Defeat at Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After capturing the doubles point, Boston College held off the Boston University women's tennis team in a trio of three-set matches to defeat the Terriers, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Flynn Recreation Complex.

Coming off last weekend's 4-3 win over then-No. 10 Syracuse, the Eagles improve to 8-0. Sophomore Lily Burchell led the Terriers by winning a super tiebreaker at line 5 in singles. Both senior Remi Ramos and freshman Shelly Yaloz won a set apiece against a nationally-ranked opponent before eventually falling in their respective third set.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BC won the top two doubles matches by a combined score of 12-5 to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
  • Sophomore Katya Martens and senior Remi Ramos were ahead, 4-3, at line 3 when their match was halted due to the Eagles claiming the doubles point.
  • The Eagles extended the lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win at line 3 singles.
  • After being blanked in the first set in the No. 1 slot, Ramos rallied to force a third set before 76th-ranked Yufei Long prevailed, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2.
  • 108th-ranked Kylie Wilcox also held off Yaloz's rally at line 2 with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 triumph.
  • The Eagles' Laura Lopez broke late in both of her sets to edge senior Sabrina Faybyshev, 7-5, 7-5, in the No. 4 slot.
  • Burchell helped BU avoid the shutout with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 win at No. 5.
  • Sophomore Katya Martens rallied to force a super tiebreaker but was unable to maintain the momentum in a hard-fought 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 defeat at line 6.
NEXT UP: BINGHAMTON
  • The Terriers will return to the Track & Tennis Center next Saturday (Feb. 16) to host former America East rival Binghamton at 10 a.m.
  • BU has won the last five meetings against the Bearcats by a combined score of 33-2 and will be seeking head coach Lesley Sheehan's 400th win.
