Cal State Fullerton Holds Off Softball, 3-1

FULLERTON, Calif. – Despite equaling Cal State Fullerton in hits, the Boston University softball team fell to the three-time defending Big West champions, 3-1, on Friday night at the Anderson Family Field.

The Easton Invitational host Titans (16-9) used three extra-base hits in the first two innings to jump out to a lead that they would never relinquish against the Terriers (11-10). Dani Martinez (6-3) and All-Big West Second Team member Sophie Frost (1 SV) combined for five strikeouts in the win against eight hits allowed, as seniors Alex Heinen and Madi Killebrew led BU with two singles apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Alexa Ponce followed up on Heinen's two-out walk with a single through the left side, but the Terriers stranded both runners on base.
  • The Titans led off with a single as BU was unable to handle the setting sun on the grounder.
  • 2018 NFCA All-Region Third Team member Deshea Hill made the Terriers pay with an RBI double for the 1-0 advantage against sophomore Ali DuBois (8-4).
  • Cal State Fullerton led off the second with a single as well and prompted a pitching change with a two-out RBI double and RBI triple to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • Freshman Emily Gant prevented the Titans from adding another run by getting a fly out to center.
  • BU had back-to-back one-out singles in the fourth by Killebrew and freshman Nicole Amodio to put the Titans on the defensive.
  • Sophomore pinch-hitter Maya Kipfmiller came through with a two-out RBI single to center to plate Killebrew, but the Terriers were unable to add more runs against Martinez.
  • Heinen (5th), Killebrew (6th), and freshman Aliyah Huerta-Leipner (7th) all had a single over the final three innings, but BU was never able to get the ball past the infield beyond the three hits for the loss.
GAME NOTES
  • All eight BU hits were singles, while the Titans had three of their eight hits go for extra bases.
  • Gant was efficient in the circle in relief, throwing 45 pitches in 4.1 innings of work with two strikeouts after the Titans forced DuBois to throw 46 pitches in 1.2 innings.
  • Cal State Fullerton's pitchers combined for 127 pitches against BU's 91.
  • Heinen earned her third multi-hit game of the season, while Killebrew claimed her second.
  • The Titans moved to 3-1 all-time in the series after winning the last two meetings by a combined score of 11-1 following BU's 5-4 win in 2017.
NEXT UP: LONG BEACH STATE AND DEPAUL
  • The Terriers will next face 2018 NCAA participants Long Beach State (2 p.m. ET) and DePaul (4:30 p.m. ET) on Friday at the Easton Invitational.
  • BU will meet the Blue Demons for the first time in program history and is 0-2 all-time against LBSU following last year's 1-0 loss.
