Terriers Drop 3OT Heartbreaker to Harvard, 12-11

BOSTON – Sophomore Chris Gray scored with one second remaining in regulation to keep the game alive, but Harvard scored with 1:45 left in the third overtime to earn a 12-11 victory over the Boston University men's lacrosse team on Tuesday night at Nickerson Field.

Gray finished the night with four goals and two assists for his second straight six-point game. His game-tying goal to force overtime came off a restart with 5.3 seconds to play. Gray beat his defender one-on-one before diving at the crease and scoring as he got pushed. It was his second buzzer-beater of the game, as he also scored a no-look goal with one second to go in the second quarter to give BU its first lead of the game, 5-4.

Seniors James Burr (2g, 1a) and Brendan Homire (1g, 2a) each had three points while freshman Jett Dziama scored a career-high two goals. Freshmen Timmy Ley and Jake Cates also found the back of the net for the Terriers while senior Michael Laviano and freshman Jack Collins each added one assist.

Juniors Reece Eddy and Chase Levesque were terrific at LSM on Tuesday, as both players gathered six ground balls apiece. Levesque also caused two turnovers while Eddy forced one giveaway. Freshman Will Carson collected two ground balls and led BU with three caused turnovers. Senior Thomas Schmidt had three ground balls and two of the Terriers' 18 caused turnovers. Junior Joe McSorley made 12 saves for the Terriers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Dziama opened the scoring at 11:47 of the first quarter before a great individual effort by Homire made it 2-0 at 9:58.
  • Harvard answered at 4:52 to cut the Terrier advantage to 2-1 entering the second stanza.
  • The Crimson scored the first two goals of the quarter to take a 3-2 lead at 8:56, but Burr responded on an EMO to tie the game at 6:23.
  • BU and Harvard traded goals before Gray's sensational buzzer-beater. With seconds remaining in the half, senior Quintin Germain fired the ball from his end of the field towards the cage. Gray picked up the loose ball after it bounced in front of the cage, and the sophomore quickly shoveled home a no-look shot for the goal.
  • That goal sparked a 5-0 run for the Terriers that was capped by another Gray goal with 3:47 left in the third quarter.
  • Nick Loring cut the Terrier lead to 9-5 with 1:41 left in the third quarter and Harvard followed with five more unanswered goals, three of which were on EMOs, to take a 10-9 lead with 3:53 to play.
  • Burr tied the score with 90 seconds on the clock thanks to an assist from Homire, but Charlie Olmert regained a one-goal lead for the Crimson with 29 seconds to play.
  • BU lost the ensuing faceoff, but the Terriers forced a turnover and called timeout to set the stage for Gray's heroics.
  • In the first overtime, Harvard hit a post on the opening possession and Ley won a race to the sideline to claim possession for the Terriers, though they were unable to convert.
  • Despite Harvard winning the opening draw of the second overtime, sophomore Kevin Snyder forced a turnover right away to give BU the first chance on offense. BU had the only three shots of that overtime, but were unable to hit the cage.
  • Harvard had the first possession of the third overtime but turned the ball over.
  • Cates had the Terriers' best look of the frame, but Kyle Mullin made the last of his 19 saves to give the ball back to the Crimson.
  • Nigel Andrews ended the game with 1:45 to go in the third overtime with a shot in close on McSorley.
