Navy Staves Off Late BU Rally to Spoil Senior Day, 79-74

BOSTON – Despite shooting over 50 percent from the field and junior Max Mahoney eclipsing the 1,000-point milestone, the Boston University men's basketball team fell to Navy, 79-74, on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.

The road team has now won the last eight meetings in the seesaw rivalry, as the Midshipmen moved to 11-18 and 8-10 in conference play with the wire-to-wire victory. Coming off Wednesday's win over two-time defending Patriot League champion Bucknell, Navy shot 61.7 percent to overcome a 21-11 deficit in points off turnovers and snap the Terriers' (14-17, 7-11 PL) three-game win streak. Junior Tyler Scanlon posted a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds with six assists, while Hasan Abdullah nearly had a double-double for Navy with nine assists, seven points and four rebounds.

  • Leading by as many as 17 points with 4:54 remaining in regulation, John Carter Jr. hit a layup at 1:47 for a 73-61 advantage.

  • Redshirt-freshman Alex Vilarino banked BU's fourth 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 46-35 entering the locker room.
  • Sophomore Javante McCoy cut the deficit to 48-39 at 16:59 on a jumper, but the Terriers wouldn't get any closer until freshman Garrett Pascoe hit a 3-pointer at 9:57 to pull within eight (56-48).
  • Carter Jr. drained another of his three 3-pointers on the ensuing possession to push the lead back to double digits (59-48), and Luke Loehr later hit two free throws at 4:54 to extend lead to 67-50.
