Softball Strikes Early, Earns 4-1 Win over Rhode Island

BOSTON – Highlighted by sophomore Ali DuBois' 11 strikeouts and a pair of extra-base RBI hits, the Boston University softball team claimed a 4-1 home victory against Rhode Island on Thursday afternoon.

With their second home win against the Atlantic 10, the Terriers improve to 14-15, while the Rams fall to 11-15. Senior Madi Killebrew led the offense with two hits, including an inside-the-park homer in the sixth, while senior Emily Morrow had an RBI triple to give BU the lead for good. Senior Alex Heinen also had two RBIs to move within two of former All-American April Setterlund's ('11) program-record 140 RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman Julia Handfield started in the circle for the Terriers but was relieved after a hard-hit ground out to second, single to left and walk.
  • DuBois (11-6) began with a strikeout and after allowing a single induced a fly out to right to end the threat.
  • Freshman Emily Gant opened with a walk and scored from first on Morrow's triple to right.
  • Heinen followed with a single to center for the 2-0 advantage.
  • Freshman Nicole Amodio battled back from a 1-2 count to earn a lead-off walk in the fifth and then advanced to third on Gant's single before scoring on Heinen's sac fly.
  • Killeberw added the fourth run in the sixth with an inside-the-park homer to left center, as the two URI outfielders hit the dirt trying to make a play on the ball.
  • Faith Musslewhite broke up DuBois' shutout bid with her fourth homer of the season in the seventh.
  • DuBois then allowed a double and two-out single to put the game-tying run at the plate, but senior Alexa Ponce came through with a strong throw on a slow grounder to third to seal the victory.
GAME NOTES
  • Morrow earned BU's second triple of the season and her seventh career triple after tallying five last year.
  • DuBois posted her fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the season.
  • Killebrew now has three homers this season and seven total after earning four last year.
  • The Rams had an 8-6 advantage in hits and left 11 on base compared to BU's four stranded runners.
  • BU improved to 31-2 all-time against the Rams in the first meeting since claiming a 7-4 home win in 2014.
NEXT UP: HOLY CROSS
  • BU will continue five-game homestand by opening Patriot League play against Holy Cross with Saturday's doubleheader slated to begin at 12 p.m.
  • The Terriers have won nine straight in the series to claim three Turnpike Trophy points.
  • The Crusaders enter the series with freshman pitcher Kelly Nelson (3-6, 1.88 ERA), who has swept both PL Pitcher and Rookie of the Week twice this season.
