Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Top-Seed Colgate Pulls Away Late to Eliminate Men's Basketball in PL Quarterfinals, 81-69

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Despite junior Max Mahoney claiming his eighth double-double of the season and sophomore Javante McCoy tallying 20 points, the No. 8-seeded Boston University men's basketball team came up short at No. 1 Colgate in the Patriot League quarterfinals, 81-69.

The Raiders (22-10) shot 64.3 percent in the second half and finished with a 10-5 advantage in 3-pointers to eliminate the Terriers (15-18) in their first meeting in a conference tournament since BU prevailed in the 1990 North Atlantic Conference semifinals.

The 2019 All-PL Second Team honoree Mahoney went 7-of-9 from the field to finish the season with a school-record 62.9 FG%, topping his own record of 60.1 FG% set last year, while adding a game-high 10 rebounds. Coming off Tuesday's 30-point performance in the PL first round win over Loyola Maryland, McCoy shot 6-of-11 and 4-of-7 in 3-point territory for his second highest point total of the season. Another All-PL Second Team member, Will Rayman, flushed six 3-pointers for Colgate en route to a game-high 26 points, while 2019 PL Player of the Year Rapolas Ivanauskas tallied 18 points and eight rebounds.

THE TURNING POINT
  • After redshirt freshman Alex Vilarino tied the game for the seventh and final time (58-58) with a slam dunk on junior Tyler Scanlon's steal at 5:24, Ivanauskas hit a layup to give Colgate the lead for good.
  • McCoy drained his third 3-pointer at 3:26 to cut the deficit to 65-64, but Rayman scored eight straight points to spark a game-ending 16-5 run with the help of back-to-back treys over the following minute to put the game away.
  • Trying to become just the second team in PL history to upset the top-seed in the quarterfinals, BU went 1-of-5 in the final 3:25 with four turnovers for the loss.
THE SETUP
  • There were 10 lead changes in the game after both road teams won wire-to-wire during the regular season.
  • Rayman hit a layup and 3-pointer to grab a 14-12 advantage for Colgate at 12:01.
  • Vilarino then scored on a short jumper and followed sophomore Andrew Petcash's 3-point play with one of his own to put the Terriers ahead, 20-14, at 9:07.
  • With a 26-24 lead, Mahoney scored eight straight points to stun the boisterous crowd and give BU its first double-digit lead, 34-24, with 2:19 remaining.
  • After Scanlon flushed a 3-pointer at 1:20, 2019 All-PL Second Team member Jordan Burns scored on a jumper to put BU's halftime lead at 37-28.
  • McCoy's 3-pointer with 18:35 remaining in regulation extended BU's lead back to double-digits, 42-30.
  • The Raiders responded with a 15-2 run over the next four minutes in which they went a perfect 6-of-6 with Burns, Rayman and 2019 PL Rookie of the Year Tucker Richardson all contributing a 3-pointer.
  • Scanlon drained both free throws on the next possession to briefly give BU its final lead of the game (46-45), which was erased by Malcolm Regisford's layup at 14:19.
  • The teams went back and forth over the next nine minutes with BU tying the game at 10:31 (50-50), 9:56 (53-53) and finally 5:24 (58-58).
 GAME NOTES
  • Mahoney finished the season at 16.5 ppg with 6.6 rpg to become the first true post player to lead the Terriers in scoring since Kevin Gardner averaged 13.7 ppg and 7.4 rpg in 2005-06.
  • Scanlon finished the season averaging 13.8 ppg and 5.0 rpg with a team-high 3.3 apg and 1.4 spg.
  • With McCoy posting a combined 50 points in the two PL tournament games, BU ended the season with three men averaging over 12 points a game for the first time since 2009-10.
  • After shooting 56.7 FG% in the first half, BU went 9-of-23 (.391) in the second to end the game at 26-of-53 (.491).
  • Shooting 48.3 FG%, the Raiders outscored BU off turnovers, 30-10, to cut the Terriers' all-time lead in the series to 28-22.

  • BU finished the season at 47.9 FG%, its best performance since setting a school-record of 48.3 FG% in 1983-84.
  • The Terriers return everyone minus senior tri-captain Kamali Chambers and will also have 2018 All-PL Rookie Team member Walter Whyte available after he missed the entire season due to injury.
