BU Claims 7-0 Victory against Defending PL Champion Army West Point

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Avenging last year's Patriot League semifinal defeat, the Boston University women's tennis team earned a 7-0 victory against defending champion Army West Point on Sunday afternoon at MIT.

The Terriers (12-8) won two doubles matches and captured all six singles points, including four in three-set matches, to end the regular season with a perfect 6-0 conference record, as the Black Knights fell to 18-7 (5-2 PL).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • All three doubles matches featured a 6-2 score with BU prevailing in two for the 1-0 advantage.
  • Senior Remi Ramos and sophomore Lily Burchell defeated Ana Joyner, one half of last year's PL Doubles Team of the Year, and Stephanie Dolehide in the No. 1 slot.
  • Sophomore Emily Kim and freshman Shelly Yaloz were also victorious at line 2.
  • Both Ramos (#2) and Burchell (#4) carried momentum from their doubles win to identical 6-1, 6-3 victories in their respective singles match.
  • The other four contests required a third set with Yaloz rallying to defeat Joyner, also the reigning PL Player of the Year, 6-7, 6-0, 7-6.
  • Senior Sabrina Faybyshev held off Army in the No. 5 slot with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory.
  • Sophomore Katya Martens rallied from a set down to force a third and then dropped just one game for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win at line 6.
  • Kim and the Black Knights' Paola Bou battled in a combined 34 games and tiebreaker with Kim coming out ahead in a 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 thriller to seal the shutout.
MATCH NOTES
  • BU is now 9-3 against Army since joining the PL in the summer of 2013 with all three losses taking place in West Point, including two 4-3 decisions last season.
  • Both Burchell and Kim finished with perfect 6-0 singles records in conference play with Burchell also posting a team-high 13 victories during the dual season.
  • Kim and Yaloz teamed for a 5-0 doubles record against PL competition, while Burchell and Ramos posted a 4-0 record.
NEXT UP: PATRIOT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT
  • As the only unbeaten Patriot League squad, BU will await official confirmation of the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament at Buckell on April 26-28.
  • Four-time PL champion BU is 13-1 in the tournament following last year's 4-3 semifinal loss to Army.
