WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – In a matchup featuring the last two Patriot League title winners, the Boston University women's tennis team came up just short to defending champion Army West Point, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Central PA Tennis Center.
The Black Knights (22-7) captured the crucial doubles point with a pair of tiebreakers and then claimed three singles points, including the final one available in a three-set thriller, to edge the Terriers (14-9) for the automatic NCAA berth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman Shelly Yaloz and sophomore Emily Kim cruised to a 6-0 victory in the No. 2 doubles slot.
- The Black Knights though won two tiebreakers at lines 1 (8-6) and 3 (7-4) to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
- All six singles matches occurred simultaneously with sophomore Katya Martens putting the Terriers on the scoreboard with a 6-4, 6-2 win at line 6.
- Senior Remi Ramos dropped just five games in a dominating 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 slot for BU's second point.
- Reigning PL Player of the Year Ana Joyner avenged an earlier three-set loss to Yaloz with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 decision, and Stephanie Dolehide held off Kim at line 3 (7-5, 6-0).
- After dropping just one game in the first set and then a tightly-contested second-set tiebreaker, sophomore Lily Burchell blanked her opponent in the third for a 6-1, 6-7(9), 6-0 victory in the No. 4 match.
- Senior Sabrina Faybyshev rallied from a set down to force a third but was broken late in a heart-breaking 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 loss, as Army repeated as the PL champions.
YEAR-END NOTES
- A two-time All-PL honoree and former PL Player of the Year, Ramos wraps up her collegiate career with 107 wins (56 singles, 51 doubles), while Faybyshev finishes with 75 (39 singles, 36 doubles) after missing most of her junior season to injury.
- The Terriers will return four players for next season from the starting lineup.
- Both Yaloz and Burchell led the Terriers with 20 singles wins apiece with Kim (19) and Martens (17) close behind.
- Yaloz and Kim finished the season with a 25-7 overall doubles record and 14-5 mark in dual play.
