Sensational Second Half Sends BU Past No. 16 Army West Point, 15-13
April 6, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshman Jake Cates notched four of his six points, including three goals, in the fourth quarter to help the Boston University men's lacrosse team erase an 8-4 halftime deficit and defeat No. 16 Army West Point, 15-13, on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium.
BU (8-4, 3-2 PL) notched the first six goals of the third quarter to take a 10-8 lead. Cates then factored on the first four goals of the fourth frame to give the Terriers' a 14-10 lead that they never relinquished. Cates finished the day with career highs in goals (4), assists (2) and points (6), including three markers in the final 15 minutes.
"Jake has been really close to have some great games," head coach Ryan Polley said. "We've been asking him to get a little more involved and a little more assertive. He made some 1-on-1 plays that were critical. I thought all our freshmen were excellent today."
Army (8-3, 4-2 PL) scored three of the final four goals of the contest, but freshman Timmy Ley notched one of his three goals on the afternoon with 1:58 remaining in regulation to stem any momentum the Black Knights had.
Sophomore Chris Gray recorded six points on two goals and four assists while Burr finished the day with a hat trick. Gray broke his own single-season record for points, which was at 71 until he reached the 76-point mark this afternoon.
Junior Chase Levesque recorded the first two-goal game of his career in addition to scooping up three ground balls and causing one turnover. Freshman Jett Dziama found the back of the net while senior Michael Laviano, sophomore Michael Doxie and freshmen Matt Hilburn and Jack Collins all added one assist apiece.
Sophomore Sean Christman went 22-of-32 at the faceoff X with nine ground balls. Freshman Will Carson led the Terriers with two caused turnovers in addition to his four ground balls. Junior Joe McSorley made nine saves in the cage.
This was the Terriers' first-ever win in West Point and their second straight triumph over the Black Knights.
"It's a tough place to play and Army is a really good team," Polley said. "It means a lot to win every Patriot League game and I'm proud of the way we handled the adversity today. The guys never panicked. We wanted to play to win and not play to lose. I'm proud of the way we responded in the third quarter."
