VANCOUVER, B.C. – Five incoming freshmen on the Boston University men's ice hockey team were selected on Saturday during the second day of the 2019 NHL Draft at Rogers Arena.
Alex Vlasic, an Illinois native, was picked by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round (43rd overall) before Robert Mastrosimone was taken 11 picks later by the Detroit Red Wings.
In the third round, Domenick Fensore was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes with the 90th pick before Detroit took another Terrier with Ethan Phillips going in the fourth round (97th overall). Case McCarthy rounded out the group when the New Jersey Devils made him the 113th selection later in the fourth.
This quintet joined Trevor Zegras, who was taken on Friday night with the ninth overall pick by Anaheim, to give the Terriers six players selected in the draft. All six played in the USHL last season with Zegras, Vlasic, Fense and McCarthy coming from the U.S. NTDP and Mastromsimone and Phillips starring for Chicago and Sioux Falls, respectively.
"This year's draft was really exciting," said head coach Albie O'Connell. "The guys who are coming in are representing BU really well right away. We're excited about the talent level and character coming in and we expect these guys to hit the ground running."
Vlasic, a 6-6 defenseman, recorded 27 points (4g, 23a) in 61 games for the U.S. Under-18 Team last season and was a member of Team USA's gold medal-winning team at the 2017 World U-17 Hockey Challenge as well as the bronze-medal squad at the 2019 U18 World Championship.
The Red Wings added two BU forwards who were named their teams' most valuable players at the 2019 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Mastrosimone (Team East) and Phillips (Team West).
Mastrosimone is the all-time leading goal-scorer for the Chicago Steel, totaling 105 points on 47 goals and 58 assists in 114 games over two seasons. He was 11th overall in the USHL in scoring last season with 60 points (31g, 29a) and was named to the USHL Third All-Star Team.
Phillips split last season between South Kent School and the Sioux Falls Stampede, tallying 19 points (9g, 10a) in 21 games at the prep level before joining collecting 43 points (16g, 27a) in 50 regular-season games with Sioux Falls. He helped the Stampede claim the USHL Clark Cup title with five points (1-4-5) in six playoff games.
Carolina added Fensore in the third round after the offensive-minded defenseman turned in 42 points (6g, 36a) in 55 games for the U-18 team last season while moving up the NHL Central Scouting's rankings throughout the year.
McCarthy, a former captain for the U-17 squad, joined Fensore and Vlasic on the blue line for the U-18 squad that won the bronze medal at the World Championship. He tallied five goals and 24 assists in 62 games last season before adding four points at the world tournament.
