Lafayette Strikes Late to Upend Men's Soccer in PL Opener, 2-1

EASTON, Pa. – Sophomore Kari Petursson netted his first goal of the season, but Lafayette struck again in the 87th minute to defeat the Boston University men's soccer team, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Oaks Stadium.
The Leopards (5-1-1, 1-0 PL) used their fourth multi-goal performance of the season to remain perfect at home at 4-0-0 and also hand the Terriers (0-6-1, 0-1 PL) a Patriot League opening loss.

- The Leopards earned the game's first corner in the third minute and first shot attempt in the 17th minute.
- After the teams went back and forth with dangerous crosses, Lafayette took the lead at 33:53 on Adam Bramson's header off Andrew Venezia's corner kick.
- The Terriers withstood another corner kick in the 41st minute and a long throw-in toward the box in the final seconds to keep the deficit at 1-0 entering the locker room.
- BU went on a counter to set up senior Matt McDonnell's first shot attempt at 51:49 that went wide left.
- After preventing a shot on back-to-back corners in the 60th minute, BU was called with a foul in the box eight minutes later, but junior goalkeeper Michael Stone guessed right and watched the low grounder go wide.
- The Leopards had a breakaway following the Terriers' corner kick in the 76th, which led to Stone coming off his line to stop q uick shot attempt.
- During the ensuing counter, freshman Marc Roura centered the ball to Petursson, who rifled a shot from 30 yards out inside the left post off the hands of keeper Alex Sutton.
- Lafayette retook the lead at 86:10 when Marcos Kitromilides played the ball back to set up Yiannis Panayides hard shot outside the box past a diving Stone.
- BU had one more quality look with under 30 seconds remaining after McDonnell headed the ball into the box, but Roura's pressured shot went wide for the loss.
- Petursson recorded his fourth career goal, while Roura earned his second assist of the season.
- The Leopards finished with a 12-4 advantage in shots and 5-1 lead in corners.
- Stone tallied all four saves in the game.
- With the loss, BU is now 4-2-1 all-time against Lafayette.
- Five of BU's six losses this season have been by one goal apiece.
- The Terriers will continue their five-game road trip at Northeastern on Tuesday (Sept. 24) with a 6 p.m. start time.
- NU earned a 2-0 victory at Nickerson Field last season following a 1-1 draw in 2017.
