Irving Records 1,000th Career Point as Terriers Control Army, 72-66

WEST POINT, N.Y. –  Finishing off a week on the road Sunday at Army, the Boston University women's basketball team got back on track with a decisive 72-66 victory over the Black Knights at Christl Arena.
 
Nia Irving highlighted the afternoon as she recorded her 1,000-career point in the third quarter, connecting on a free throw with 3:21 on the clock for the historic moment.
 
Riley Childs picked up her first double-double of the season with 11 rebounds and 10 points. Katie Nelson led the Terriers with 19 points, while Maggie Pina followed with 18 points, and Irving added 13.

How It Happened
  • BU turned the momentum in its favor midway through the first when  Pina picked off Army in transition and sent it back to a wide-open Nelson, starting a 9-0 Terrier run.
  • Childs hustled for a pair of putback layups before Maren Durant capped the opening quarter with a trio of free throws, giving BU a 19-13 edge.
  • Irving put in three straight points of her own to kick off the second, while Sydney Johnson made it a 24-16 game with a drive through the lane.
  • Army came alive with a 6-0 run, trimming the gap to 24-22 with 5:30 left in the half.
  • BU answered with an 11-3 streak, capped by Nelson delivering a floater at the buzzer, pushing BU's advantage to double digits, 35-25, entering the break.  
  • Pina netted a quick five points to start the third, furthering the lead to 42-30.
  • Irving put in her 1,000th career point from the free throw, and Pina closed the third with another 3-pointer as the Terriers held the upper hand, 56-45.
  • Nelson and Childs maintained the hot streak from deep, as each connected from beyond-the-arc to push out a 62-47 command with 7:38 to go.
  • The game was never in question after that as BU picked up its fourth straight win in West Point. 
Game Notes
  • Irving became the 23rd Terrier in program history to reach the 1,000-career point milestone.
  • BU has won five of the last six matchups against Army and tied its longest winning streak in the series at three games.
  • Maren Durant made her first career start.
