Terriers Cruise to 85-53 Win at Loyola Maryland on CBS Sports Network

BALTIMORE, Md. – Extending its win streak to three games, an energized Boston University men's basketball team cruised to an 85-53 victory at Loyola Maryland Monday night on the CBS Sports Network.

The Terriers (10-8, 4-1 PL) shot 53.2 percent from the field and held the Greyhounds (9-9, 1-4 PL) to just 36.8 FG% for their largest margin of victory in a road Patriot League game since joining the conference in the summer of 2012. Loyola entered the game averaging 71.7 ppg and 46.1 FG% but could never get into a rhythm with nine assists against 16 turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU jumped out to a 17-2 lead, as the Greyhounds started 1-of-11 from the field.
  • One of six Terriers to score during the game-opening stretch, junior Javante McCoy hit the first two buckets after the teams combined to miss the game's first seven attempts.
  • Senior Max Mahoney had a picture-perfect feed to the cutting sophomore Jonas Harper for the layup and 28-8 lead at 6:11.
  • Seeking a spark, the Greyhounds responded to junior Andrew Petcash's 3-pointer with their first trey, but sophomore Jack Hemphill flushed from the corner to help silence the crowd for 36-11 lead at 3:25.
  • Sophomore Fletcher Tynen beat his shot clock with a jumper before Loyola drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut BU's lead to 42-17 entering the locker room.
  • BU's lead grew to 30 points (58-28) for the first time when sophomore Alex Vilarino hit a layup at 13:12 in the second half.
  • Sophomore Walter Whyte gave BU its largest lead three minutes later, 65-30, with a 3-pointer.
  • Trying to avenge last season's PL first round loss at BU, Loyola would eventually cut the deficit to 26 points but never got any closer, as the Terriers shot 57.1 percent in the second half.
 GAME NOTES
  • McCoy led the Terriers with 13 points, three assists and three steals.
  • Both junior Sukhmail Mathon and Whyte had 12 points apiece.
  • Whyte led the Terriers with eight rebounds, as BU won the battle of the boards, 42-28.
  • BU outscored Loyola off turnovers, 22-10, and had a season-high 33 points off the bench against a Division I opponent.
  • The Terriers improved to 12-6 all-time against the Greyhounds and snapped an eight-game streak in which the home team prevailed in the series.
  • PL leading scorer Andrew Kostecka (21.4 ppg) was limited to just 13 points on 5-of-15 shooting for the Greyhounds.
  • The previous high for margin of victory in a road PL game for the Terriers was 18 points, set in a 71-53 win at Navy on Jan. 5, 2017.
NEXT UP: COLGATE
  • The Terriers will remain on the road and visit the defending Patriot League champion Raiders on Saturday (Jan. 18) with a 2 p.m. start.
  • The road team won both regular season matchups, but Colgate had the last word with an 81-69 home victory in the PL quarterfinals.
