Three freshmen from the Boston University men's ice hockey team were selected in the 2020 National Hockey League Draft, which took place virtually Tuesday and Wednesday.
Goaltender
Drew Commesso was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round, 46th overall, before forward
Luke Tuch was taken with the very next pick by the Montreal Canadiens. In the third round with the 86th pick, the St. Louis Blues drafted forward
Dylan Peterson. All three players came to BU this year after spending two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program.
Commesso was the first North American goaltender selected in the draft and the second overall. He posted an 18-7-1 record for the U18 team last season with a 2.05 goals-against average, which was the second-best in program history, and a .920 save percentage.
It marks the third straight year that a Terrier has been drafted by the Blackhawks as Commesso joins junior
Jake Wise and sophomore
Alex Vlasic in Chicago's organization.
Tuch, the brother of Vegas Golden Knights forward Alex Tuch, put up 53 pts (25g, 28a) over two seasons with the NTDP and scored a goal and added an assist at the 2020 BioSteel All-American Game. He is a native of Baldwinsville, N.Y.
This marked the first time in 21 years that a BU player was drafted by the Canadiens as Chris Dyment was the last in 1999.
Peterson was third on the U17 squad in points with 29 (8g, 21) before adding 25 points on eight goals and 17 assists with the U18s this past season. A dual citizen, he was born in California but he grew up in Ontario and played in the Canadian International Hockey Academy.
"The coaching staff watched in the office today and it was exciting to hear their names called and see this long draft process come to an end," said head coach
Albie O'Connell. "After having their season cut short and not be able to showcase their skills at the U18 world championships or their strength and endurance at the combine, these guys were overanalyzed for months. They are three outstanding prospects and three great additions to our program. Like the rest of us, they can't wait to play again."
Since O'Connell returned to BU as a assistant coach in 2014, 28 Terriers have been selected in the first three rounds of the NHL Draft.
