Men's Ice Hockey Unveils 24-Game 2020-21 Schedule
November 11, 2020 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - The 2020-21 Boston University men's ice hockey season is set to kick off on Friday, Dec. 4, as Hockey East officially announced the league's schedules on Wednesday.
The Hockey East season will consist of 20 league games with each team facing either other twice. "Flex" weekends have been inserted in each team's schedule to allow for non-conference play against league opponents or to play rescheduled league games if necessary. The Terriers have four non-conference games scheduled with additional weekend home-and-home series against crosstown rivals Northeastern and Boston College for a total of 24 games.
Team schedules were created to best ensure a double round robin regular season for each program. Efforts were also made to align men's and women's schedules to mitigate instances where multiple campus populations come into close contact in a single weekend.
Official word on the Beanpot and Hockey East tournaments will be announced at a later date.
After opening with a weekend series at Vermont on Dec. 4-5, BU's home opener will take place on Friday, Dec. 11, against Massachusetts at 6 p.m. The Terriers will begin the season playing home games at Walter Brown Arena.
"Having a schedule in place is certainly the most exciting news we've had in months," said head coach Albie O'Connell. "I want to thank Drew Marrochello and the rest of the league's athletic directors for working with the presidents and our new commissioner to make this a reality. There's obviously a lot that needs to happen to ensure that the games take place and I know that we will continue to take the necessary precautions. We think that our team has a lot of potential this season and we're excited to get back on the ice and face our Hockey East rivals."
Hockey East announced its NESN schedule through Jan. 1 and the home opener against UMass as well as the return trip to Amherst the following day will be both televised. BU and Northeastern will kick off a New Year's Day Hockey East tripleheader on NESN at Matthews Arena beginning at 1 p.m.
Led by O'Connell in his third year as head coach, the Terriers return 20 letter winners from last year's squad, including First Team All-American David Farrance. Just the second BU defenseman to be a Hobey Baker top-10 finalist, Farrance led all Division I blue liners in points (43), goals (14) and power-play goals (9) last season. Senior Logan Cockerill will serve as captain while Farrance and redshirt junior Ty Amonte will be the assistant captains.
While spectators will not be permitted at home games, Hockey East will once again partner with NESN and ViacomCBS Digital to provide fans across the world the opportunity to view every single Hockey East game in the 2020-21 season. In addition to the NESN broadcasts, all other streamed games will be made available to fans for free on one of ViacomCBS Digital's platforms. Full television schedule details and how-to-watch information about streamed games, as well as specific game times, will be announced in the coming days.
