HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Boston University women's basketball team handed Colgate its first loss of the season on Cotterell Court, proving resilient in a 60-58 victory Wednesday night for its fifth straight win.
Pina, the two-time defending Patriot League Rookie of Week, led all scorers with 18 points and posted a 6-of-9 clip from downtown.
Nia Irving and
Katie Nelson followed with 12-point efforts, while Nelson also added seven rebounds and six assists.
Holding a seven-point lead at the end of the third quarter, Colgate exploded for an 11-0 run to take the lead, 56-52, with 2:48 remaining. BU stayed the course, working the free throw line to push out a 6-0 streak before the Raiders tied it up for the sixth time to make it a 58-58 game with 21.6 ticks left.
Down to its final possession,
Maren Durant was fouled with 1.5 seconds left, and converted on both attempts from the charity stripe to seal the win.
How It Happened
- Pina was on fire from 3-point range to start, hitting on three of her first four attempts as BU edged out an early 11-8 advantage.
- Nelson picked up the hot hand as she added back-to-back baskets before Riley Childs ended the first quarter by stealing a Raiders inbound pass and finished with a buzzer-beating layup to put the score at 17-14.
- Pina picked up where she left off to start the second stanza, connecting again from downtime to give BU a six-point edge.
- Durant and Nia Irving made moves under the rim to close the half, sending the Terriers into the break with a 29-24 command.
- Colgate made it a one-point game to start the third before Pina netted her sixth triple to start a 7-0 Terrier run, capped by a Childs steal and coast-to-coast finish.
- Irving drove from the top of the key to sink a buzzer-beater from the block, giving the Terriers a 47-40 grip on the scoreboard at the end of the third.
- Pina and Sydney Johnson attacked the paint to start the fourth, maintaining a two-possession edge, 51-45.
- Colgate turned the momentum around, using an 11-0 run to take a 56-52 lead with 2:47 left on the clock.
