BOSTON – Off to its best start since 1993 following a five-game sweep in Florida, the Boston University softball team will remain south and compete against five different opponents at the Winthrop Classic starting Friday morning.
The Terriers will start off against Georgetown at 10 a.m. and follow up against Towson at 12:30 p.m. The following day, BU will then face three-time defending Southern Conference regular season champion UNC Greensboro at 10 a.m. before battling Eastern Kentucky at 12:30 p.m. Virginia will mark the final opponent on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU was just one of two squads from a non-Power 5 conference and one of 15 total to open the season this past weekend with at least a 5-0 record.
- The Terriers claimed two wins over defending Southland Conference champion Sam Houston State (9-3, 2-1) and Stetson (10-0, 2-0) along with a 6-0 victory over George Mason.
- Sophomore Aliyah Huerta-Leipner batted a team-high .500 with a homer and seven RBIs alongside junior Marina Sylvestri (.231 avg.).
- Freshmen Caitlin Coker (.429) and Audrey Sellers (.385) combined for seven runs scored.
- Named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week for the sixth time, junior Ali DuBois (3-0, 0.70) posted 22 strikeouts in 20 innings of work.
- Sophomore Emily Gant (2-0, 0.78 ERA) earned two doubles at the plate and allowed just one run in nine innings, while freshman Lizzy Avery (0-0, 0.00 ERA) posted eight strikeouts in four innings of work.
- Overall, BU batted .308 at the plate while holding opponents to .238 with 6-2 advantage in extra-base hits.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Georgetown, 0-5 (Friday, 10:00 a.m.)
- Georgetown is 0-5 to start the 2020 season after going 14-35 last season ... Fell to UConn, Delaware, LIU, FGCU and Boston College by a combined score of 13-1.
- Mae Forshey led the offense with three singles ... Last season, the Hoyas' top batters were the returning Noelle Holiday (.347, 9 HRs, 38 RBIs), Savannah Jones (.300, 3 HRs, 8 2Bs), and Forshey (.299, 24 RBIs).
- London Diller (0-3, 1.75 ERA) tallied 18 strikeouts in 16 innings of work and pitched a no-hitter in 1-0 loss against BC after posting a 6-12 record and 6.23 ERA last season ... Cassie Henning (0-2, 5.00 ERA) started the other two games.
- Last season Georgetown batted .248 while holding opponents to .334.
- BU won the only meeting between the two programs with a 6-3 decision at the University of South Carolina in 2014.
Towson, 1-1 (Friday, 12:30 p.m.)
- Though the Tigers saw three games canceled games at the USC Upstate Classic, they did go 1-1 with 4-3 win over St. Francis (Pa.) and 9-1 loss to Bucknell after finishing 27-27 last season.
- Julia Jackson, Julia Smith-Harrington and Jessica Swistock went a combined 7-of-16 with two RBIs and four runs scored ... Smith-Harrington is the top returning batter from last season at .323, 18 doubles, eight homers and 39 RBIs.
- Sara Johnson (1-0, 2.33 ERA) posted 10 strikeouts in six innings of work against the Red Flash after posting 12-9 record and 4.26 ERA last season.
- In 2019, the Tigers batted .275 while holding opponents to .272 with advantages in both doubles (84-62) and stolen bases (48-44).
- BU is 13-5 all-time against Towson with the Tigers winning the last matchup during the opening round of the 2001 America East tournament (2-0) in Delaware.
UNC Greensboro, 1-2 (Saturday, 10:00 a.m.)
- UNCG is 1-2 following a challenging slate of games this weekend at the Carolina Classic with 5-3 win over defending Summit League champion North Dakota State and tough extra-inning losses to then-No. 19 South Carolina (3-2, 9 inn.) and Big 10 member Ohio State (5-4, 10 inn.) ... The Spartans went 33-23 last season and came up just short in the Southern Conference championship final.
- UNCG was limited to a .105 batting average over the weekend but drew 14 walks against 31 strikeouts for a .245 on-base percentage.
- Delaney Cumbie (.338 avg, 6 HRs, 29 RBIs) is the top returning batter for a team that hit .265 last season and held opponents to .246
- Freshman Morgan Scott (1-1, 1.52 ERA) tallied 12 strikeouts in 13.2 innings this past weekend ... Kylie Bouplon (7-10, 3.51 ERA) is the top returning pitcher.
- The Spartans own a 2-1 record, last claiming a 5-2 win in 2002 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Eastern Kentucky, 3-1 (Saturday, 12:30 p.m.)
- The Colonels went 35-22 last season and started 2020 with 3-1 record at the Mercer Invitational with wins over Mercer (5-4), Wright State (10-0) and Dayton (14-6) following a 5-2 loss to Tulsa.
- Sammi Miller batted an impressive .643 with three RBIs and five runs scored, while Carly Robinson (.308) collected two of EKU's six homers with seven RBIs.
- EKU batted .293 last season with Miller (.391, 26 RBIs) and Robinson (eight HRs, 35 RBIs) the top returning hitters.
- Mollie Paulick (0-1, 3.00 ERA) posted 13-7 record and 2.61 ERA last season with 144 strikeouts in 120.2 innings ... Bethany Tood (2-0, 7.00 ERA) earned two wins over the weekend.
- This weekend will mark the first-ever meeting between the Colonels and the Terriers.
Virginia, 3-1 (Sunday, 9:30 a.m.)
- After posting 22-31 record last season, Virginia started this year with a 3-1 record, most recently rallying for 9-7 win over Appalachian State following an earlier 1-0 loss ... Claimed two wins over Charlotte (7-6, 10-5).
- Tori Gilbert led the Cavaliers with .571 batting average, six runs, triple, homer and four RBIs, while Donna Friedman (.286) tallied team-high five RBIs.
- UVA had four different pitchers start a game with Aly Rayle (3-1, 3.20 ERA) tallying 19 strikeouts in 15.1 innings ... Molly Grube (0-1, 1.40 ERA) posted eight strikeouts in 10.0 innings.
- Virginia won the only meeting between the two programs in 2003, 10-9, in Raleigh.
