BOSTON – Continuing a challenging slate of Patriot League games, the Boston University men's basketball team will open a two-game road trip at Navy on Saturday with tip-off set for 4 p.m.
The Terriers are currently in a tie for second in the standings at 9-4 alongside American with this past Monday's opponent Colgate owning a two-game advantage. The Midshipmen are in a three-way tie for fourth at 7-6 with Army West Point and Wednesday's upcoming opponent, Lafayette.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU is 7-6 on the road compared to its 8-3 home mark ... The Terriers have won their last three road games at Army (80-66), Bucknell (77-57) and Holy Cross (79-64).
- Needing 66 points to reach 1,500, senior Max Mahoney is averaging a team-high 15.5 ppg and 7.6 rpg with sophomore Walter Whyte second in both categories (12.4 ppg, 7.0 rpg).
- Junior Javante McCoy (12.3 ppg) needs 20 points to reach the 1,000-point milestone and is leading the team in conference play at 15.5 ppg.
- BU is averaging 72.5 ppg and 46.6 FG% while holding opponents to 68.5 ppg and 44.4 FG% ... The Terriers are 14-1 this season when finishing with a higher field goal shooting percentage than opponents.
- The Terriers are 2-1 so far when it comes to sweeps, claiming a pair against Army and Holy Cross ... They most recently suffered their first against defending PL champion Colgate on Monday night and will try to avoid a similar fate against Navy.
SCOUTING NAVY
- The Midshipmen are coming off a 60-59 home win over Bucknell that snapped a three-game losing streak.
- Navy is 9-4 at home compared to its 4-7 road mark with notable victories over East Carolina (62-57), Cornell (72-61) and Mount St. Mary's (59-48) ... The Midshipmen's last loss came against American (62-54) on Feb. 5.
- 6-foot-0 guard Cam Davis is averaging a team-high 16.8 ppg and 2.7 apg, while 6-foot-3 guard Greg Summers (9.4 ppg) leads Navy in rebounding at 6.4 rpg.
- 6-foot-8 center Evan Wieck is averaging 11.1 ppg and 5.3 rpg in conference play.
- Navy is averaging 63.8 ppg and 41.5 FG% while holding teams to 62.6 ppg and 43.1 FG%.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Terriers lead the all-time series, 10-5, and won the first-ever meeting in the Round of 16 in the 1959 NCAA tournament.
- The road team has won each of the last nine meetings.
- Last year at Navy, Mahoney tallied 18 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to help BU overcome a 14-point second-half deficit for the 75-69 victory.
- In the previous meeting at Case Gym on Jan. 22, Navy escaped with a 60-58 overtime victory ... Summers and Davis led Navy with a combined 36 combined points, while Mahoney and Whyte combined for 28 points and 19 rebounds.
