The No. 8/9 Boston University women's ice hockey team will conclude its regular season this weekend when the Terriers host UConn for a pair of games at Walter Brown Arena. Friday's puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the teams set to face off on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Prior to Saturday's game, the Terriers will honor seniors
Alexandra Calderone,
Abby Cook,
Sammy Davis,
Deziray De Sousa,
Breanna Scarpaci,
Katie Shannahan,
Abbey Stanley and
Natasza Tarnowski. This group of eight outstanding student-athletes helped lead BU to its first-ever Beanpot title as a varsity program and has been part of two straight 20-win seasons.
Saturday is also the 13th annual ChiliFest. Five of Boston University's dining halls will compete to see who has the best chili. Fans will be able to sample creations from each dining hall and vote for the winner.
PLAYOFF PICTURE
- The Terriers clinched the No. 2 seed in the Hockey East playoffs and will host either New Hampshire or Maine next weekend for a best-of-three quarterfinal series.
- UNH and Maine both play Saturday, with the Wildcats hosting Boston College and Maine traveling to Vermont.
- The seventh-place Black Bears trail sixth-place New Hampshire by just one point, but they hold the tiebreaker with the Wildcats.
- If UNH wins or Maine loses, the Terriers will host Maine.
- Should Maine finish even with or ahead of UNH, then the Terriers will face the Wildcats next weekend.
THESE TWO GAMES MATTER
- While BU has nothing to play for in terms of the league standings, these two tilts are crucial for the Terriers.
- BU is currently eighth in the PairWise, which determines the field for the NCAA Tournament.
- That is one spot shy of an at-large bid.
- Two wins this weekend keep the Terriers in good shape for one of the final at-large berths.
- For UConn, these games offer a chance to earn home-ice advantage for next weekend's quarterfinal round.
- The Huskies are tied with Providence for fourth place entering this weekend; both teams are two points behind third-place BC.
- Providence holds the head-to-head tiebreaker with UConn, while the Huskies hold the tiebreaker against the Eagles.
HISTORY WITH THE HUSKIES
- BU is 27-11-7 all-time against the Huskies, including a 13-6-3 record at Walter Brown.
- The Terriers went 2-0-1 against UConn last season and are 4-0-3 against the Huskies over the last three campaigns.
- Dating back to a victory over the Huskies in the 2010 Hockey East title game, BU is 24-2-4 against UConn.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE HUSKIES
- Corinne Schroeder stopped all 38 shots she faced and senior Deziray De Sousa scored in the final minute of the second stanza to lead BU to a 1-0 win at UConn on Oct. 18, 2019.
- Abby Cook and Courtney Correia assisted on De Sousa's game-winner.
- Schroeder made 14 saves in the third period en route to the shutout.
BEST OF BU AGAINST UCONN
- Sammy Davis leads BU with six goals and eight points against UConn.
- Jesse Compher has notched seven points (3g, 4a) while Abby Cook leads BU with six helpers against the Huskies.
- Abbey Stanley has secured four assists while Deziray De Sousa has also notched four points (2g, 2a).
- Courtney Correia (1g, 1a), Natasza Tarnowski (1g, 1a), Breanna Scarpaci (2a) and Nara Elia (2g) all have at least two points against UConn.
- Corinne Schroeder has allowed just one goal or less in each of her last four starts against UConn for a .978 save percentage.
- She has never allowed more than two goals in any of her seven starts against the Huskies, boasting a 4-0-3 record with a .956 save percentage.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
- UConn is currently tied for fourth in the league standings and needs at least one point this weekend to have a chance at clinching home ice for the quarterfinals.
- The Huskies are 2-2-0 in their last four games and split a weekend home series with Merrimack on Feb. 14 and 15.
- Junior Natalie Snodgrass leads UConn with 14 goals and 30 points and is one of three Huskies with a team-high 16 assists.
- Seniors Catherine Crawley and Briana Colangelo also have 16 assists.
- Senior Morgan Fisher is 9-11-2 in 22 starts this year, posting a 2.09 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage.
- Fisher made 25 saves in the Huskies' 1-0 loss to BU in October.
IT'S GOOD TO BE HOME
- BU will only have to play one true road game the rest of the season.
- The Terriers will host their next four (or five, if necessary) games at Walter Brown Arena.
- The league's championship weekend will take place at Merrimack.
- If the Terriers advance to the NCAA Tournament, they will play their quarterfinal game on the road.
- The Frozen Four is at Agganis Arena.Â
SCHROEDER, STUART MAKE HISTORY
- Junior Corinne Schroeder and sophomore Kate Stuart became the first Terrier netminders to record two consecutive shutouts since Kerrin Sperry ('14) accomplished that feat on Dec. 7 and 10, 2010, against UConn and Northeastern.
- No pair of Terrier goaltenders had combined for back-to-back shutouts since Oct. 21 and 22, 2006, when Allyse Wilcox ('09) and Melissa Haber ('10) held Vermont scoreless during a weekend series.
- BU has never recorded a shutout in three straight games.
STUART KEEPS SHINING
- Sophomore Kate Stuart made 17 saves on Sunday against UNH to record her first collegiate shutout.
- Fifteen of those stops came over the first two periods of play.
- Stuart is now 8-1-1 this season and 11-2-2 for her career.
- She lowered her goals-against average this season to 1.58 while raising her save percentage to .938.
- During her current nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-1), Stuart has a 1.31 GAA and a .943 save percentage.
SCHROEDER STILL SENSATIONAL
- Junior Corinne Schroeder notched her fourth shutout of the season on Saturday thanks to a 33-save effort at UNH.
- It was her second 1-0 victory of the season, as she stopped all 38 shots she saw in a 1-0 triumph at UConn on Oct. 18.
- Schroeder is one of only two goaltenders in the country to have three shutouts with 30 or more saves.
- She enters the weekend ranked fourth in the NCAA in both save percentage (.944) and goals-against average (1.50).
DEFENSE IS STINGY
- BU has allowed just 1.56 goals per game, which is fourth-best in the country and second-best in Hockey East.
- At even strength (not including empty-netters), BU gives up one goal per game.
- BU has not allowed a goal over the last 130:19, and it has not given up an even-strength marker in the last 158:27.
OFF TO FAST STARTS
- The Terriers have scored the opening goal in 27 of their 32 games this year.
- That ranks first in the NCAA.
- BU is 16-1-1 this season when leading after the first period, with that lone loss coming on Jan. 28 at Northeastern.
DAVIS LEADING BY EXAMPLE
- Redshirt senior Sammy Davis leads the Terriers in goals (16), assists (21) and points (37).
- She is among the top 10 in Hockey East in all three of those categories.
- Davis ranks third in points, tied for fourth in assists and tied for seventh in goals among Hockey East skaters.
- She enters the weekend having notched a point in six straight games and seven of her last eight appearances, totaling five goals and six assists in that span.
- Davis had a seven-game point streak snapped on Jan. 10 but has since tallied 13 points (7g, 6a) over her last 10 games.
- She has factored on three of the Terriers' last four game-winning goals.
- BU is 19-2-3 when Davis records a point and 10-1-2 when she scores a goal.
