Terriers Trek to Colgate to Begin Patriot League Play

The Boston University men's lacrosse team will open Patriot League play on Saturday afternoon when the Terriers travel to Colgate. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m.

HISTORY AGAINST COLGATE

  • BU is 3-3 against Colgate, though the Raiders have won each of the last two meetings.
  • The Terriers are 2-1 in Hamilton, including an 18-7 win in 2017.
  • If Colgate wins today, it would match the Terriers' three-game win streak in the series that lasted from 2015 until 2017.
  • The Terriers' 18-11 road win over the then-No. 18 Raiders in 2015 was the program's first-ever win over a ranked opponent.

LAST TIME AGAINST THE RAIDERS

  • BU jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Colgate went on a 6-0 run en route to a 9-7 win in Hamilton on March 9, 2019.
  • The Terriers were within one entering the fourth quarter, but Colgate scored the lone goal over the final 15 minutes to hold on for the triumph.
  • Timmy Ley scored four goals and Will Carson notched his first collegiate goal.
  • Sean Christman led the Terriers with five ground balls while Carson, Nicholas Ellerton, Michael Doxie and Joe McSorley all had two ground balls apiece.
  • McSorley was terrific in the cage, making 13 saves to keep the Terriers in the contest.
  • Chase Levesque led BU with two caused turnovers.

SCOUTING THE RAIDERS

  • Colgate is 0-4, though two of the losses have been at No. 3 Syracuse and No. 4 North Carolina.
  • The Raiders have also lost at No. 19 Hobart and at No. 10/8 Princeton.
  • Saturday will be the Raiders' home opener.
  • Senior Griffin Brown leads Colgate with 12 goals and 15 points while sophomore Brian Minicus has a team-high nine assists and is tied for second on the squad in points (12) with junior Mike Hawkins (9g, 3a).
  • Senior Malcolm Feeney is 60-for-21 (.496) at the faceoff X and leads the Raiders with 23 ground balls.
  • Senior Parker Baddley is first on the squad with six caused turnovers.
  • Sophomore Sean Collins has played every minute in the cage this season for Colgate, posting a .430 save percentage and a 20.25 goals-against average.

RECAPPING THE BELLARMINE WIN

INSIDE CATES' CAREER DAY

  • Sophomore Jake Cates set new career highs in points (7) and assists (3), and he also matched his career high with four goals in the Terriers' 17-11 win at Bellarmine on Saturday.
  • Cates finished the first half with three goals and two assists.
  • He last scored four goals on April 6, 2019, when he rallied BU to a 15-13 win at Army West Point.
  • Cates has collected nine points on five goals and four assists this season, all of which have come over the last three games.

SPREADING THE WEALTH

  • All six of the Terriers' starting attackmen and midfielders have registered at least one point in each of the last three games.
  • The starting attack unit of freshman Vince D'Alto (11g, 5a), sophomore Timmy Ley (4g, 3a) and freshman Louis Perfetto (6g, 4a) have combined for 21 goals and 12 assists over the last three contests.
  • The starting midfield trio of sophomore Jake Cates (5g, 4a), junior Tommy Nook (1g, 5a) and senior Jared Nugent (4g) were responsible for 10 goals and nine assists.
  • Twelve different Terriers have scored a goal over the last three games while 15 different BU players have notched at least one point in that span.

LEY LIGHTING IT UP

  • Sophomore Timmy Ley has scored a goal in 14 straight games dating back to last year.
  • He has collected six goals and four assists for 10 points this season, including two goals and two assists at Bellarmine on Feb. 22.
  • Ley has started at attack in all 22 games he has played as a Terrier.

EDDY ONE OF THE BEST IN THE NATION

  • Reece Eddy has been one of the best LSMs in the country this season.
  • No other defender in the NCAA has more ground balls than Eddy, who has gathered 27 so far this season.
  • Eddy also enters the weekend ranked second in the nation with 14 caused turnovers.
  • Since joining the Terriers last season, Eddy has collected 98 ground balls and 48 caused turnovers.
  • In addition to his prowess on the defensive side of the field, Eddy also has one assist this season.

CHASE CONTINUES TO IMPRESS

  • Senior Chase Levesque finished last week with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers over two games.
  • Levesque is tied for 10th in the nation with nine caused turnovers.
  • He has also gathered 19 ground balls, which is tied for fourth among NCAA defenders and third overall on the Terriers.

DYNAMIC DUO

  • The duo of Reece Eddy (14 CTs) and Chase Levesque (9) ranks second in the NCAA with a combined 23 caused turnovers.
  • No other pair of defenders has collected more ground balls than Eddy (27) and Levesque (19) this season, as they have combined for 46 ground balls in five games.

CAUSING HAVOC

  • The Terriers rank first in nation in both caused turnovers per game (13.2) and total caused turnovers (66), 10 more than the No. 2 team. 
  • BU also ranks fifth in the country with 175 ground balls.

D'ALTO DOMINANT AGAIN

  • Freshman Vince D'Alto has been the Terriers' best offensive player over the last three games.
  • No other freshman in the country has more goals than D'Alto, who has notched 12 through five games.
  • After he paced the BU offense with career highs in goals (3), assists (2) and points (5) at UMass Lowell on Feb. 15, D'Alto notched five goals and added an assist for six points at Bryant on Feb. 18.
  • He then matched his performance at Lowell by tallying five more points (3g, 2a) in the 17-11 win at Bellarmine.
  • D'Alto now leads the Terriers with 12 goals and 18 points, while his six assists are tied for first on the squad.

MCSORLEY NAMED GOALKEEPER OF WEEK

  • After making 27 saves in two games, senior Joe McSorley was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday.
  • He began the two-game stretch with a 16-save effort at Bryant on Feb. 18 in which three of the Bulldogs' goals came while McSorley was playing out of the cage.
  • McSorley then made 16 stops at Bellarmine on Saturday.
  • This is the second time McSorley has claimed that award this year; he also earned the honor on Feb. 3.
  • McSorley owns a .557 save percentage and has averaged 12.80 saves per game; both of those totals rank in the top 20 among goalkeepers that have played at least three games. 
  • Over his last three appearances, McSorley boasts a .595 save percentage (44 saves).

PERFETTO KEEPS ROLLING

  • Freshman Louis Perfetto set new career highs in goals (4) and points (5) in the Terriers' 17-11 win at Bellarmine.
  • He has yet to be held without a point.
  • Perfetto is tied for the team lead with six assists and he is second on the team with seven goals and 13 points.
