Long Beach State Drops Softball at Easton Invitational

FULLERTON, Calif. – Taking the diamond for the opener of the Easton Invitational, the Boston University softball team fell, 8-0, against Long Beach State in five innings Thursday morning at the Anderson Family Field.

The second game of the doubleheader against Cal State Fullerton was canceled due to rain and the rest of the season was canceled on the same day by the Patriot League Council of Presidents as well due to the ongoing spread of COVID 19 (2019 novel Coronavirus).

Seniors Kali Magane and Lizzie Annerino were recognized before the first pitch and made their first starts of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman Caitlin Coker opened the game with a walk before junior Marina Sylvestri singled through the left side to place a pair of runners on with one out, but Long Beach State put away the next two batters to end the threat.
  • Starting in the circle, Magane retied the side in order in the bottom half of the frame.
  • LBSU came alive in the second, bringing in three runs across on two outs, highlighted by a two-RBI double.
  • LBSU loaded the bases with one away in the bottom of the third, but the Terriers limited the damage to a 4-0 deficit.
  • Following a rain delay lasting nearly an hour, LBSU homered and took advantage of two free passes to further its lead to 7-0 and tacked on one more in the bottom of the fifth to claim a run-rule victory.
GAME NOTES
  • Entering the week with an RPI ranking of 47, BU will see the season end at 14-8, while the 49ers finish at 13-12 after avenging Monday's 9-8 home loss to the Terriers.
  • Both three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll members, Magane and Annerino helped the Terriers reach three Patriot League championship rounds and two NCAA tournaments ... They both pitched, played a fielding position and recorded two at-bats with Annerino earning a walk.
  • Sophomore Aliyah Huerta-Leipner had the other single for the Terriers.
  • A former All-Mountain West First Team honoree, Kellie White finished with nine strikeouts against three walks for the shutout.
