Five Terriers Earn Patriot League Year-End Recognition

March 2, 2020

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – After finishing tied-for-second in the Patriot League standings, the Boston University men's basketball team had five Terriers earn year-end accolades, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.

Senior Max Mahoney (1st), sophomore Walter Whyte (2nd) and junior Javante McCoy (3rd) helped BU claim three All-Conference awards for the first time since 2013. The Terriers placed a member on each of the three teams for the first time since 2010 when John Holland (1st), Corey Lowe (2nd) and Jake O'Brien (3rd) were honored.

Adding to his list of awards, the now three-time All-Conference honoree Mahoney also received All-Defensive Team accolades alongside sophomore Jonas Harper, as BU had two recognized for their defensive prowess for the first time in program history. Freshman Ethan Brittain-Watts was the fifth Terrier honored, becoming the ninth Terrier in eight years under head coach Joe Jones to claim All-Rookie Team accolades.

A native of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, Max Mahoney will leave an indelible mark on the program, having already established himself as the record holder for field goal shooting percentage (.607), well ahead of BU Hall of Famer Jim Hayes' 56.3 FG%. Previously named to the third team in 2018 and second team in 2019, Mahoney is the first Terrier to receive three All-Conference awards since D.J. Irving ('14) accomplished the feat. Averaging a team-high 15.6 ppg and 8.2 rpg, he is just 18 rebounds away from becoming the fourth Terrier in program history to reach 1,500 points and 700 rebounds.

Currently on a four-game streak with a double-double, Mahoney was the only player in the Patriot League to rank in the top 10 for points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks during conference play. He most recently had 23 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in a thrilling come-from-behind win over Bucknell and nearly had a triple-double with 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in a home win over Army en route to College Sports Madness Mid-Major Player of the Week honors. On the defensive front, he recorded two or more steals in seven PL contests to claim his first caeer All-Defensive award.

After missing all of 2018-19 due to injury, the 2018 All-Rookie member Walter Whyte made an immediate impact, collecting his first-ever PL Player of the Week award after averaging 23.0 ppg in the first two games. Second on the team in points (12.7 ppg) and rebounds (7.2 rpg), the New Haven, Connecticut, native posted six double-doubles during conference play to rank third in PL at 8.0 rpg while adding 12.6 ppg. Hitting a team-high 54 3-pointers, Whyte is the first Terrier to go from All-Rookie to All-Conference the following season of availability since Cedric Hankerson ('18) accomplished the feat in 2014 and 2015.

Named PL Player of the Week back on Feb. 10, Javante McCoy finished the regular season third on the team in scoring at 12.0 ppg while adding a team-high 3.2 apg. In conference play, he increased the average to 14.2 ppg. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native nearly had a double-double with 14 points and eight assists in a win over Dartmouth and later posted a season-high 24 points in a home victory over Loyola Maryland. He most recently hit the final two field goals in the come-from-behind win over Bucknell en route to 17 points and his first All-Conference award.

Jonas Harper started all but one game and played a key role in helping the Terriers lead the PL in scoring defense during conference-only games at 65.1 ppg while holding opponents to 43.6 FG%. The Stamford, Connecticut, native averaged 7.1 ppg while finishing second on the team with 29 steals. The 2018 All-Rookie member most recently had nine points, three steals and three rebounds in the win over Bucknell.

Though he only made one start during the season for an ill McCoy, Ethan Brittain-Watts was still able to make his mark during the regular season. He first had eight points at South Carolina to help the Terriers earn their first-ever victory against the SEC. He later had 10 points at Colgate and most recently recorded eight points against Bucknell on Saturday. Demonstrating his ball handling skills, he dished out four assists in wins at Army and Loyola Maryland.

Selected to finish fifth in the preseason poll after finishing with a 7-11 conference record last season, the No. 3-seeded Terriers will next host No. 6 Navy on Thursday in the Patriot League quarterfinals with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
