BOSTON – The No. 3-seeded Boston University men's basketball team will host No. 6 Navy in a Patriot League quarterfinal matchup on Thursday night at Case Gym with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.

The Terriers finished in a tie-for-second in the Patriot League standings, but American had the tiebreaker due to earning a sweep against No. 5 Lafayette. BU will try to become the first No. 3 seed in PL history to earn the automatic NCAA berth and the first since 2017 to reach the title game. Thursday's matchup will mark the first postseason meeting between BU and Navy since the Terriers defeated the Midshipmen, 62-55, in the 1959 NCAA Sweet 16.

CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT HISTORY
  • BU is seeking its seventh overall conference title and first since winning the 2011 America East title as the No. 2 seed.
  • Coming off back-to-back PL semifinal appearances, BU is 48-33 (.593) all-time in conference tourneys and 5-6 in the PL with an appearance in the 2014 title game.
  • The Terriers are 24-14 (.632) all-time in quarterfinal games and 4-3 in home PL matchups, most recently eliminating Loyola Maryland in the 2019 PL first round.
TERRIER TIDBITS
  • The PL announced All-Conference honors Monday afternoon with senior Max Mahoney (1st, Defensive), sophomore Walter Whyte (2nd), junior Javante McCoy (3rd), sophomore Jonas Harper (Defensive) and freshman Ethan Brittain-Watts all being recognized.
  • Having recorded a double-double in four straight games, Mahoney (15.6 ppg, 8.2 rpg) was the only player in the PL to rank in the top 10 in conference-only stats for points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.
  • Whyte (12.7 ppg, 7.2 rpg) ranked third in PL-only games at 8.0 rpg, while McCoy (12.0 ppg) ranked eighth in assists at 3.2 apg.
  • Harper (7.1 ppg) finished second on the team with 29 steals and helped the Terriers hold PL opponents to a conference-best 65.1 ppg.
  • Brittain-Watts (3.2 ppg) posted all eight of his points in the second half on Saturday to help the Terriers overcome a 16-point deficit for 74-71 win over Bucknell.
  • The Terriers are 10-3 at home this season with a 7-2 conference mark, dropping a 79-63 decision to Colgate and 60-58 OT game to Navy.
  • BU is averaging 71.4 ppg and  46.0 FG% while holding opponents to 67.2 ppg and 43.9 FG%.
SCOUTING NAVY
  • The Midshipmen are coming off a 62-60 loss at Lafayette and are 4-10 on the road this season with wins at BU, Bucknell, Lehigh and Brown.
  • 6-foot-0 guard and 2020 All-PL Second Team member Cam Davis is averaging a team-high 16.4 ppg and 2.6 apg, while 6-foot-3 guard Greg Summers (9.8 ppg) leads Navy in rebounding at 6.7 rpg.
  • 6-foot-8 center Evan Wieck averaged 9.8 ppg and 4.9 rpg in conference play.
  • Navy is averaging 63.6 ppg and 40.8 FG% while holding teams to 64.0 ppg and 43.5 FG%.
SERIES HISTORY
  • BU leads the all-time series, 11-5, after posting a 77-54 road victory on Feb. 15.
  • The road team has won the last 10 games in the series.
  • The Terriers shot 56.4 FG% in their last win with Whyte posting a double-double and Mahoney falling one board short of a second.
  • In the OT loss, BU was held to 38.6 FG%, as Summers and John Carter Jr. combined for 36 points for Navy.
