BOSTON – Senior
Sukhmail Mathon posted his second career double-double, but the Boston University men's basketball team suffered a 89-45 setback to Colgate on Sunday evening at Case Gym.
Despite the Terriers (1-3, 1-3 PL) holding Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Jordan Burns to just two points in the opening 20 minutes, Colgate (3-1, 3-1 PL) jumped out to a 36-24 halftime lead and then pulled away in the second.
Mathon scored 13 points and added 11 boards as part of his strong performance on Sunday. Junior
Walter Whyte also reached double figures, posting 10 points in addition to five rebounds and two steals. They were two of nine different Terriers to score on Sunday in BU's fourth game over the last seven days.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Owning an earlier 101-57 win over Army West Point, Colgate started on a 10-0 run, but Mathon answered with five straight points of his own to kickstart a 9-0 Terrier run that brought BU within one.
- Junior Jack Hemphill drained a 3-pointer to cut Colgate's lead to 14-12 at 10:52, but the Raiders responded with a 6-0 spurt.
- Mathon and redshirt-freshman Daman Tate combined for back-to-back buckets to make it 20-16, but Colgate finished the half strong to take a 36-24 advantage into halftime.
- Colgate pulled away in the second half by shooting over 60% from the field, including a 5-of-7 mark from beyond the arc.
- Whyte scored eight of his 10 points in the second half, highlighted by a great hustle play at the end of the contest. Freshman Anthony Morales worked hard to force a turnover at midcourt, with Whyte picking up the loose ball and finishing with a layup.
GAME NOTES
- The Terriers have had a double-double in three of the four games this season with Mathon joining Whyte and Tate in the club.
- Mathon tallied 15 points and 12 rebounds for his other double-double a year prior at Binghamton.
- Without the services of regular starters Javante McCoy and Jonas Harper, BU started a season with a fourth different starting lineup for the first time under 10th-year head coach Joe Jones.
- Colgate finished with an 8-1 advantage in made 3-pointers, as the Terriers extended their streak with a 3-pointer thanks to Hemphill's early trey to 759 games, a run that began following 0-of-10 performance vs. Vermont on Feb. 10, 1996.
NEXT UP: ARMY WEST POINT
- The Terriers will welcome the Black Knights to Case Gym for a two-game series on Jan. 16-17.
- Saturday's (Jan. 16) tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. with the rematch set for 3 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 17).
- BU won both contests last season, including an 81-59 home victory, en route to the PL tournament crown.
