Javante McCoy tallying a game-high 21 points and junior
Walter Whyte posting a double-double, the Boston University men's basketball team finished its five-game homestand with a 76-65 loss to Army on Sunday afternoon.
The Black Knights (8-3, 4-2 PL) shot 53.7 percent from the field and finished with an 11-6 advantage in made 3-pointers against the Terriers (1-5, 1-5 PL), who had cut a 13-point deficit to four with under six to play in regulation.
After missing the previous two games, McCoy went 7-of-14 and added three assists, while Whyte posted 13 points and 10 rebounds for his 12th-career double-double. Impacted by foul trouble, senior
Sukhmail Mathon also finished in double figures with 14 points and six rebounds.
Lonnie Grayson led Army with 21 points and six rebounds, while Josh Caldwell added 17 points. Tucker Blackwell came off the bench with four 3-pointers, and Aaron Duhart dished out six assists to help guide the offense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Whyte opened with a 3-pointer to ignite an 11-4 run capped by junior Jack Hemphill's steal and layup at 12:38.
- After the Black Knights used three treys to pull within one (14-13) at 10:40, Mathon, Whyte and McCoy eached hit a bucket over the next 90 seconds to match BU's largest lead of the game, 20-13.
- Army responded with a 9-2 spurt to tie the contest at 6:21 and had a 3-pointer follow McCoy's bomb to keep the game tied, 25-25.
- Grayson then got a defensive rebound and layup to give the Black Knights the lead for good with 5:02 remaining in the half.
- Jalen Rucker's jumper and 3-pointer extended the lead to 38-29 at 1:15 before McCoy flushed both free throws to put the halftime deficit at seven points.
- Army started the second half on the attack with two more 3-pointers to extend their lead to 46-33 at 16:39.
- The Terriers chipped away at the deficit and eventually pulled within five (55-50) at 10:16 and later four (57-53) at 5:54.
- Caldwell used a 3-point dagger to push Army's lead to 64-55 at 3:38 and responded to Mathon's layup with one of his own on the next possession.
- Army added six free throws over the final 1:06 to seal the weekend sweep.
GAME NOTES
- Though he hit seven field goals for the third time this season, McCoy added six free throws off seven attempts to eclipse 20 points for the ninth time in his career.
- McCoy now ranks 24th all-time at BU with 1,132 career points, just 27 shy of No. 20 Randy Cross ('65).
- Mathon was one point shy of tying his personal best set against Binghamton last season.
- Whyte has two double-doubles this season in four appearances after tallying eight total a year ago.
- The Terriers used their sixth different starting lineup of the season after having all four returning starters from last year's PL championship win available for the first time.
- BU outscored Army off turnovers (16-13) and in the paint (32-28), as the Terriers finished 24-of-53 (.453) and 6-of-20 3FG (.300).
