Mastrosimone Overtime Goal Lifts Terriers Past Maine, 3-2

BOSTON – The Boston University men's ice hockey team earned its second overtime victory in five days as sophomore Robert Mastrosimone provided the heroics to lift the Terriers to a 3-2 victory over visiting Maine on Friday at Walter Brown Arena.'

Senior David Farrance had a hand in all three goals, opening the scoring just 1:41 into the contest before assisting on the other two to help the Terriers stretch their win streak to four games and improve to 4-1-0, their best start in six years.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers have scored first in all four of their wins now as Farrance got things started soon after the opening puck drop, collecting a pass at the left before creating a shot at the top of the slot that eluded Maine netminder Victor Ostman.
  • BU then had three power-play chances later in the first but was unable to take advantage of them.
  • Maine, however, was able to get an equalizer on one of them as Adam Dawe notched a shorthanded goal with 2:16 left in the opening period to make it a 1-1 affair.
  • Sophomore Markus Boguslavsky gave BU the lead back off a perfectly executed rush as he got ahead of the defenders following passes from Farrance and sophomore Sam Stevens at the 3:38 mark of the second.
  • The Black Bears once again drew even when Brad Morrissey's shot above the right circle got through traffic and found the back of the net with 13:26 left in regulation.
  • The Terriers created a couple of late chances but settled for overtime before continuing their win streak.
  • In the extra session, Farrance forced a turnover in the BU zone and the puck made its way to sophomore Domenick Fensore.
  • Fensore had the puck on his stick for the next 22 seconds before attracting two of the three Maine skaters and leaving the puck for Mastrosimone, who wristed a shot just as he was entering the right circle and ended the game with his first overtime tally as a Terrier.

GAME NOTES
  • Freshman Drew Commesso recorded 23 saves to pick up the win in the BU goal while Ostman made 20 stops.
  • BU's win streak is its longest since winning five straight to open its 2018 postseason.
  • The victory snapped a four-game winless streak (0-3-1) for BU against Maine, which was the Black Bears' longest such run in the series since 2002.
  • The 4-1-0 start is the program's best since the 2014-15 season, when the Terriers opened the year with five wins in their first six games (5-1-0).
  • Farrance has four multi-point games already this season and continues to lead the nation in points per game at 2.20.

UP NEXT

  • Game time is set for 1 p.m. and the BU women's team will face Maine at 6:30 p.m.
