BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Boston University men's soccer team came up short to Loyola Maryland, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Northeastern's Parsons Field.

The Greyhounds (4-3-2, 2-1-0 PL) struck early in the 18th minute and prevented any chance of a rally with two second-half goals to hand the Terriers (1-7-1, 1-3-0 PL) their largest margin of defeat this season.

"Today, we got what we deserved," said head coach Kevin Nylen. "We got beat by a team who has a winning mentality and wanted to win. We lost before the game even started."

HOW IT HAPPENED

After BU earned a free kick outside the box on the left side of the field, junior Quinn Matulis curled a dangerous ball at the far post, but the Terriers were unable to make the connection in the seventh minute.
BU cleared the Greyhounds' first corner five minutes later and pushed the ball up the field to set up a hard shot from Matulis that was blocked.
Loyola took the lead for good at 17:24 when Justin Ingram brought the ball toward the goal line and sent a short cross past junior goalkeeper Francesco Montali for the easy tap in by Kelan Swales.
The Terriers nearly tied the game at 21:32 when freshman Brian Hernandez sent a low shot just inches wide of the right post following a strong run into the box by senior Gianluca Arlotti.
Graduate student Peter Kargbo had the last quality look in the half at 44:12 with a header that went wide off a cross, as the Greyhounds entered the locker room with a one-goal advantage.
Loyola Maryland came out attacking in the second half with a 46th minute corner and missed header.
The Terriers' backline made a save at 56:42, and Montali added another at 57:31 to keep the game, 1-0.
The Greyhounds cleared back-to-back BU corners in the 63rd minute.
Jake Sweeney put the game away by setting up Jake Mayer for a 15-yard strike at 68:50.
Ingram added the third goal by pouncing on a loose ball at the top of BU's box in the 88th minute.

GAME NOTES

Arlotti and Hernandez both led BU with two shots apiece.
Loyola recorded a 13-6 advantage in shots and 8-3 lead in corner kicks.
The Greyhounds moved to 5-3-3 all-time in the series with their fourth straight win.
The Terriers hosted the game at Parsons Field due to BU's Class of 2020 Commencement ceremonies being moved outdoors to NIckerson Field.

UP NEXT

The Terriers will make the short trek over to Harvard on Tuesday (Oct. 5) for a 7 p.m. start time in a non-conference matchup.
The home team has won each of the last five meetings with BU claiming a 2-0 win in 2019 and Harvard escaping in OT in 2018, 2-1.
