The Boston University men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the Patriot League Championships on Sunday at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. The women will race at 11 a.m., followed by the men at noon.
BU will look for its third straight conference title on the women's side and will enter Sunday with momentum after a strong showing at the Princeton Invitational on Oct. 16. The Terriers took third at that race, with junior Andrea Claeson finishing 10th in her season debut with a 6.1K time of 21:54.1. Claeson was the Patriot League runner-up last year.
In addition to Claeson, the Terriers bring back three other scorers from last year's title-winning squad in graduate students Madeline Bachmann, Corinne Batsu and Veronica Kriss. Bachmann was a Second Team All-Patriot League honoree last year in her first race as a Terrier, while Kriss and Batsu's top-16 finishes ensured BU won a tiebreaker against Army West Point to clinch the 2020 title. Bachmann, Batsu and Kriss all ran personal-bests at Lehigh earlier this month.
"The women have some high expectations as the returning champions," associate head cross country coach Jordan Carpenter said. "We have been building momentum all year long and we know if we go execute the race we know we are capable of that we will walk away with the victory. Army and Navy both have great squads this season, so we will certainly have our work cut out for us. In the individual race, we expect to have a handful of women at the front of the field with Andrea and Corinne looking to contest for a top-three finish."
On the men's side, the Terriers will look to improve upon their runner-up finish from a year ago. Sophomore Matthew Mason, last year's Most Outstanding Rookie, has been in top form of late, running a personal-best 8K time of 24:31.5 at Lehigh on Oct. 1 and finishing 16th at Princeton in his most recent race.
Junior Foster Malleck finished fourth at last year's conference meet and will look to once again earn First Team All-Patriot League accolades. Malleck ran a personal-best time of 24:48.7 at Lehigh on Oct. 1, as did his classmate Mike Hagen, who was third at the season-opening Minuteman Invitational. Senior Marcel Aubry has had a breakout year for BU and also posted a PR at Lehigh.
"The men have shown flashes of how good we can be all season," Carpenter said. "We know if we can put together a strong day across our 1-5 that we can compete with anyone. Army and Navy have both looked increasingly strong, but we are excited to stick our noses in the team battle and see when things land. Individually, we'll be looking for Matt to mix it up in the front of the race and compete for a top-five spot. We expect a number of others to position themselves in the top-15 overall."
Following the Patriot League Championships, the Terriers will return to Franklin Park for the NCAA Northeast Regional on Nov. 12.
