BOSTON – After honoring the senior class, the Boston University women's soccer team used a late strike from freshman Eileen Solomon and another strong defensive effort to defeat American, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
Both junior Gretchen Bennett and freshman Celia Braun earned a save for their third straight combined shutout, as the Terriers (8-5-1, 4-1-0 PL) extended their win streak to four games and remained atop the Patriot League standings at 12 points. BU held the Eagles (5-6-1, 2-2-1 PL) to a season-low three shot attempts and stayed unbeaten in the all-time series at 7-0-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- American put a long shot on goal in the fourth minute but Bennett was in position for the save.
- The Eagles kept the game scoreless by clearing a pair of dangerous free kicks into the box and watched helplessly as junior Ashley Buck's header went inches above the crossbar off senior Jenna Oldham's corner kick.
- American's Julia Kato stopped shots from senior Kate Collins and Raphael over the final 15 minutes to keep the game scoreless entering the half.
- Both teams had notable saves early in the second half, starting with Kato positioning herself well to stop junior Geovanna Pereira's header off Oldham's cross.
- The Eagles drew a foul outside the box in the 52nd minute and tried a low shot at the left post, but Braun made a great diving save to her right to keep the game scoreless.
- Pereira was stopped again in the 59th minute and was just a tad right of the post at 60:36.
- Junior Sophia Woodland ripped a shot just wide in the 64th minute to continue to apply pressure.
- BU finally broke through 10 minutes later, when Raphael made a move around a defender to play the ball back to Ross for the long service pass into the box and Solomon's perfectly placed one-time finish.
- Solomon made a run toward the net and let the ball bounce once before chipping it over the keeper toward the left post.
- Trying to mount a rally, the Eagles were unable to attempt a shot in the final 15 minutes for the shutout defeat.
- Solomon became the ninth Terrier to earn a goal this season.
- Raphael and Ross put BU at eight total now with an assist.
- Raphael earned three points this week after netting the game-winning goal on Tuesday against Yale.
- Splitting time between the net this season, Bennett and Braun have totaled five shutouts with their second in conference play.
- BU posted a 14-3 advantage in shots while attempting all three corners in the game.
- The Terriers will conclude their three-game homestand by hosting Holy Cross on Wednesday (Oct. 13) at 7 p.m.
- BU earned a 1-0 road victory this past spring in the last meeting between the two in-state conference rivals.
