BU Drops 59-57 Contest To Maine

BOSTON, Mass. - Junior Sydney Johnson led BU with 12 points and classmate Liz Shean added 11 points off the bench, but Maine outlasted BU to grind out a 59-57 decision on Sunday afternoon at Case Gym.

Despite trailing for most of the second half, the Terriers (2-2) gained a 57-56 lead with 33 seconds left in the fourth when sophomore Caitlin Weimar fed senior Riley Childs for an uncontested layup on the left block. The Black Bears (2-3) hit one of two free throws on the ensuing possession to knot the score. With nine seconds left, however, BU could not cleanly inbound the ball and turned it over to Maine. Following two fouls, Anne Simon made two free throws, and redshirt senior Emily Esposito's three-pointer missed the mark to seal the contest.

Neither team led by more than eight points, and Maine's largest lead was only five. However, the Black Bears erased a halftime deficit by knocking down 50 percent of their shots in the second half. BU hit nine of their 16 attempts in the fourth quarter, but were felled with a 2-for-12 performance in the third.

Childs notched BU's first double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds, adding three steals. Weimar notched 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting, corralling six boards.

Simon led all scorers with 26 points. Maeve Carroll also tallied a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds, while Bailey Wilborn hit four three-pointers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU scored the first six points of the game from three different Terriers and forced three Black Bear turnovers, leading to a Maine timeout just over three minutes into the game.
  • Maine countered with a 9-2 run to take a 9-8 lead, capped with a Simon layup.
  • Johnson returned the edge to BU with a driving layup, then Childs scored the final five points, including a three-pointer before the buzzer, to put the Terriers on top 15-9 after one.
  • Shean came off the bench and scored six consecutive Terrier points, the last two on a layup for a 21-18 Terrier advantage with 3:41 until halftime.
  • BU's lead ballooned to 28-20 as Childs found junior Maggie Pina in the corner for three, but Carroll converted a layup to make it 28-22 at the break.
  • The Black Bears scored the first seven points of the third quarter. Simon hit a three and cashed in a layup, then Carroll scored to force a BU timeout as the visitors took a 29-28 lead.
  • Junior Maren Durant responded with a hook shot that also drew a foul, but she missed the free throw. That was BU's last lead (30-29) of the quarter as Wilborn buried a triple in response. Maine would lead 41-38 after three quarters.
  • Johnson and Carroll traded layups to open the final stanza, then Shean drilled a second-chance triple to knot the score at 43 1:41 into the period.
  • Simon scored at the 3:38 mark to match the Black Bears' largest advantage of the quarter, 53-49, but Weimar made layup, then Esposito canned a midrange jumper from the right elbow to equalize at 53 with under three minutes to play.
  • Alba Orois nailed a three-pointer the other way, only for Childs to hit a bucket and draw a foul. The free throw could not connect, but Durant denied Simon at the other end.
  • On Childs' go-ahead scoop, Weimar received the pass from the wing and drew a double-team near the restricted area, and she found Childs alone for the basket.
