BOSTON – Following a five-game road trip, the Boston University men's basketball team will return home to host Merrimack on Sunday with tip-off slated for 1 p.m.
The Terriers played three of the contests in Florida, first capturing the Jax Bracket championship at the Jacksonville Classic and then dropping a hard-fought 81-80 overtime decision at ACC power Florida State on Wednesday. Coming off a 75-60 win vs. Hartford, the Warriors will be facing their third Patriot League opponent of the season, following a 55-45 home win vs. Lehigh and 74-51 defeat at Army.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- Graduate student Javante McCoy tallied a season-high 22 points with four assists against the Seminoles and currently leads BU at 16.9 ppg with 3.1 apg. He's shooting a personal-best 51.8 FG% and 47.1 3FG%.
- Graduate student Sukhmail Mathon earned his second double-double of the season with a season-high 16 points and 12 rebounds while adding a career-tying four assists. He's nearly averaging a double-double at 10.6 ppg and 6.4 rpg.
- Senior Walter Whyte is the third Terrier in double figures at 13.8 ppg but has missed the last two games due to injury. Sophomore Daman Tate stepped up at FSU by becoming the eighth Terrier to reach double figures this season with a season-high 12 points, while junior Ethan Brittain-Watts produced nine points in his first start of the season.
- Senior Fletcher Tynen has started all seven games and is averaging a personal-best 5.6 ppg and 3.9 rpg while classmate Jonas Harper is averaging 7.3 ppg with the help of 13 3-pointers.
- BU is 1-0 at home this season, earning an 85-61 win vs. Gordon College, and will try to start a season 2-0 at The Roof for the first time since 2016 when the Terriers started 4-0.
- Overall, BU is averaging 71.1 ppg and 46.9 FG% while holding teams to 64.1 ppg and 42.7 FG%. The Terriers own a positive 4.9 rebounding margin along with a negative turnover margin of 2.1.
SCOUTING MERRIMACK
- The Warriors shared one opponent with the Terriers in Hartford and will face another future BU non-conference opponent in UMass Lowell.
- Two of Merrimack's losses came against Power 5 schools at Rutgers (48-35) and at Virginia Tech (72-43).
- 6-foot-8 forward and 2021 All-NEC Third Team member Jordan Minor had his first double-double of the season vs. Hartford and currently averages 12.9 ppg and 6.1 rpg.
- 6-foot-2 guard Mykel Derring is the other player in double figures at 10.0 ppg, while 5-foot-11 guard Mikey Watkins averages 9.4 ppg with 3.3 apg and 2.4 spg.
- Merrimack is shooting just 38.3 FG% but is holding teams to 39.7 FG%. The Warriors own an impressive turnover margin of 6.9 with the help of 10.0 steals per game.
SERIES HISTORY
- BU is 7-0 all-time in a series that dates back to 1968 but will be hosting Merrimack for the first time since claiming a 94-71 win at Walter Brown Arena in 1984.
- The two teams squared off at Merrimack at the end of 2019 with Whyte hitting the go-ahead 3-pointer for a 69-67 lead and the Warriors missing a game-tying layup before the buzzer sounded.

- In the last meeting, similar to the Florida State game, GW beat BU on an offensive putback for a 64-63 home win in 2019.
