STORRS, Conn. - The Boston University women's ice hockey team dropped its first Hockey East contest of the season on Friday evening in a 2-1 loss at UConn in the opener of a weekend home-and-home series.
UConn scored 11:09 into the game and took a 2-0 lead early in the third. BU was unable to solve the Husky defense until senior
Courtney Correia tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season with 1:58 to play.
BU now stands at 5-2-3 overall and 4-1-3 in Hockey East play while the Huskies improve to 9-1-0 with a 5-1-0 league mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Huskies opened the scoring 11:09 into the contest as they cycled the puck before Danielle Fox, from behind the net, found Jada Habisch at the left crease for a goal.
- UConn earned the first power play of the contest soon after the goal but the Terriers' penalty kill was up to the task.
- BU got what would be its lone power-play opportunity of the contest last in the first period but could not muster an equalizer.
- Senior Kate Stuart made 13 of her 32 saves in the middle period to keep the visitors in the game.
- The Huskies notched an insurance goal and the eventual game-winner when a shot from Morgan Wabick from the high slot got through traffic 22 seconds into a power play at the 3:02 mark of the third.
- BU pulled Stuart in favor of an extra attacker and it payed off as Correia took a pass from junior Julia Nearis and sent it home off a one-timer from above the left circle at 18:02.
- The Terriers registered four shot attempts in the final 70 seconds of play but could not send the game to overtime.
GAME NOTES
- Nearis extended her point streak to 12 games with her assist on the Correia goal.
- Sophomore Tamara Giaquinto also picked up an assist on the BU tally.
- UConn held a 35-28 shot advantage.
- BU was 0-for-1 on the power play while the Huskies went 1-for-4.
- Stuart turned in a strong 32-save performance for the Terriers.
- Samantha Carpentier-Yelle recorded 27 saves to earn the win in goal for UConn.
