Terriers, Eagles Skate to 3-3 Draw in Thrilling Edition of Comm. Ave. Rivalry

December 10, 2021

BOSTON – In a thrilling 285th edition of the Battle of Comm. Ave., the Boston University men's ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 draw with Boston College on Friday evening at Agganis Arena.

BC took the extra point with a 1-0 win in a five-round shootout. The Terriers move to 6-9-3 and 5-5-3 in Hockey East play while the Eagles now stand at 8-5-3 with a 5-3-2 conference mark.

Graduate student Max Kaufman scored a pair of goals, including the game-tying tally at 11:17 of the third period, while junior Domenick Fensore opened the scoring with his third goal of campaign. Freshman Ty Gallagher assisted on all three strikes for his second three-assist effort of the season. Senior Ty Amonte set up the tying goal while junior Robert Mastrosimone and freshman Brian Carrabes also chipped in one assist apiece.

Sophomore Drew Commesso played well in a 30-save performance, making four terrific stops in a back-and-forth 3-on-3 overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU opened the scoring midway through the opening frame when Fensore converted from the high slot after Mastrosimone pounced on a rebound from a bid by Gallagher.
  • Gallagher helped to double the Terriers' lead when he threaded a long pass to Kaufman, who skated all alone from the BC blue line and beat Eric Dop (32 saves) blocker side at the 8:28 mark of the second.
  • The Eagles rallied in the third period with three goals in a span of 7:11 to take a 3-2 lead with 11:09 remaining in regulation.
  • Kaufman's second marker of the contest forced a 3-3 tie with 8:43 to play. Gallagher began the sequence with a deft backhand pass to Amonte in the Terrier zone. The senior raced up the right wing, got all the way to the bottom of the right circle and then slid a pass to Kaufman in front. With a defender on him, Kaufman still managed to redirect the puck past Dop.
  • Both teams were aggressive in the overtime but the two goaltenders made some stellar saves to keep the game tied.
  • BU nearly had a golden scoring chance in the final 10 seconds, but just as Amonte was about to escape the Terrier zone on a potential breakaway, Jack St. Ivany tripped him and time ran out before the Terriers could manage a power-play chance.
  • Each goaltender was sharp in the shootout, but BC's Trevor Kuntar was the only player to convert in the fifth round, as junior Matt Brown rang his attempt off the post to try and extend the shootout.
GAME NOTES
  • This was the 46th overtime game between the two rivals, resulting in the 21st tie in series history.
  • Kaufman, who posted his first two-goal game as a Terrier, has scored four goals over the last three games.
  • Three of those four goals have come in the third period or overtime.
  • Gallagher's first three-assist game of his career came in the Terriers' 8-6 win over Merrimack on Oct. 23.
  • Fensore notched his team-leading 14th point of the season with his goal.
  • The Terriers only took one penalty on Friday, a matching minor that did not result in a BC power play.
  • After not playing in front of fans last season, BU and BC entertained a crowd of 6,150.
UP NEXT
  • BU will host the U.S. National Under-18 Team in an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon at Agganis Arena.
  • Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
