Hot-Shooting Terriers Storm Past Army, 82-41

BOSTON – Led by a blistering shooting performance and a 35-1 run between the first and second quarter, the Boston University women's basketball team thumped Army, 82-41, Saturday afternoon in its return to Case Gym.

BU led by as many as 47 points, and held at least a 30-point command for the duration of the second half. The nine points allowed in the first half was the lowest scoring output the Terriers have held an opponent to over the first 20 minutes since joining the Patriot League. Additionally, BU shot above 60 percent from the field for the first time since 2008, connecting on 60.7 percent (37-of-61) while limiting the Black Knights to just 26.9 percent (14-of-52).

Three Terriers scored in double figures, led by a 15-point outing from Maggie Pina. Fellow sophomores Liz Shean (12) and Sydney Johnson (10) also reached double-digits, while Riley Childs pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

How It Happened
  • Katie Nelson knocked down a 3-pointer to start things off before Childs and Maren Durant worked the block to pull the Terriers ahead, 7-4.
  • Childs and Johnson combined for the next four buckets, and Pina knocked down a midrange jumper as BU ran off 14 straight points to seal a 19-4 lead at the end of the first.
  • Annabelle Larnard kept the offense firing with a triple to start the second quarter while Johnson played a hand in the next six points to keep the offense red-hot
  • Emily Esposito capped what proved to be a 25-0 run, which held Army scoreless for over 12 minutes, to make it a 30-4 game with just under six minutes left until halftime.
  • Pina sunk back-to-back triples from the wing as BU poured it on to close the half, grasping a 42-9 advantage at the break.
  • BU continued to fire on all cylinders, as Durant picked up where she left off in the paint, while Nelson either assisted or scored on the next three baskets, pushing the Terriers ahead, 50-13, with 6:07 remaining in the third.
  • Pina beat the buzzer to end the third as the Terriers took a 43-point command, 63-20.
  • Liz Shean ran off eight straight points to kick off the final frame, pushing BU to lead by as many as 47 points.
  • Mackenzie Miers continued BU's assault in the paint, and Sophie Beneventine scored her first career basket on a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to highlight the fourth quarter.
