Terriers Continue Historic Start, Drop Holy Cross 71-53

BOSTON – Hosting Holy Cross in the first of a three-game series, the Boston University women's basketball team continued its torrid start as it downed the Crusaders, 71-53, Wednesday night at Case Gym.

With the win, BU is off to its best start through the first 10 games in its 46-year history with a 9-1 record.

Maren Durant led the Terriers with a career-high 16 points on an efficient 8-for-9 shooting clip and added six rebounds. Riley Childs was also dynamic from the floor, connecting on 5-of-6 attempts for 14 points to go with a game-high nine rebounds. Emily Esposito stroked 13 points, while Sydney Johnson also reached double figures with an even 10.

How It Happened
  • Durant established her presence early, working the post for BU's first three field goals.
  • From there, the Terriers turned the offensive up another gear, as a Katie Nelson fast break layup capped what proved to be an 11-0 run, widening the gap to 15-8 with 3:21 left in the stanza.
  • BU clamped down on the defensive end as well, limiting Holy Cross to just one field goal over the final seven minutes of the quarter as the score stood at 21-10 in favor of the Terriers.
  • Johnson and Durant combined for the first eight points of the second frame before Riley Childs made it a 31-17 game with 5:55 left until halftime.
  • Maggie Pina and Nelson roped back-to-back 3-pointers, paving the way for BU to seize a 40-24 command at the half.
  • Durant and Esposito continued to attack the lane, giving BU its largest lead, 44-24, two minutes into the second half.
  • Childs caught fire midway through the frame, ripping seven of BU's next 14 points to keep the Terriers well ahead, 57-39, at the end of the third.
  • BU coasted in the fourth quarter to seal its fifth straight win against the Crusaders.

Game Notes
  • BU dominated in the paint once again, posting a commanding 50-24 advantage, marking the second straight game it recorded 50 points within the key.
