Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Colgate Uses Late Surge to Defeat Men's Basketball, 82-72

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Despite senior Sukhmail Mathon earning a double-double and Colgate shooting three percentage points below its season average, the Boston University men's basketball team came up short, 82-72, on Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court.

The Raiders (10-1, 10-1 PL) finished the first half on an 18-4 run and used a 10-2 spurt late in the second to extend their win streak to nine games, as the Terriers dropped to 5-7 (5-7 PL). The contest marked BU's first visit to Hamilton since winning the Patriot League title last March, 64-61.

Mathon led all players with a career-high 19 points and season-high 12 rebounds while adding two blocks. Both senior Javante McCoy (15 pts.), junior Fletcher Tynen (12 pts.) and junior Walter Whyte (11 pts.) also reached double figures. BU finished the game 28-of-66 (.424) from the field and 8-of-27 (.296) in 3-point territory.

Colgate also had four players in double figures and finished 32-of-69 (.464) with eight 3-pointers on 26 attempts (.308). Tucker Richardson came up two assists shy of a triple-double with 17 points and 10 boards, while Nelly Cummings had 17 points and six boards. Preseason PL Player of the Year Jordan Burns added 11 points and seven assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Jeff Woodward hit a layup to give Colgate an early 11-5 lead at 14:42, the Terriers scored 12 of the next 17 points with Tynen draining a 3-pointer and a fastbreak layup at 9:48 to pull back ahead, 17-16.
  • BU used a 7-0 spurt to grab its largest lead of the game four minutes later, 30-22, thanks to Whyte's 3-pointer and back-to-back field goals from Tynen and junior Jack Hemphill.
  • The Raiders though caught fire with four bombs in the final four minutes to enter the locker room ahead, 40-34.
  • Cummings ended the first half and started the second with a 3-pointer to help maintain the momentum for Colgate.
  • Burns drove to the hoop to extend the Raiders' lead to 53-43 at 13:34, but the Terriers quickly scored eight straight points with the help of 3-pointers from sophomore Garrett Pascoe and Tynen to pull within two at 11:20.
  • McCoy joined in with a trey to put the deficit at 61-60 with 7:25 remaining before Richardson had one of his own on Colgate's next possession.
  • Mathon followed with two free throws, but Colgate scored seven quick points, including a 3-point play by Woodward at 4:51.
  • McCoy responded with a layup and bonus free throw to put the deficit at 71-65.
  • However, the Raiders netted five straight points and never saw their lead cut below seven the rest of the game.
GAME NOTES
  • Mathon's previous best was 15 points set against Binghamton back on Dec. 7, 2019.
  • McCoy moved past Tony Simms ('83) for the No. 18 spot in the BU record book at 1,227 career points.
  • Tynen became the seventh Terrier to score 10+ points this season, as he came up just two shy of his personal best set against Emerson his freshman year.
  • Tynen finished a perfect 5-of-5 while hauling in a career-high seven rebounds and is now a combined 5-of-7 over the last three games from behind the arc.
  • Freshman Daman Tate matched his personal best with a team-high three assists.
  • The Raiders outscored BU off turnovers (16-12), in the paint (48-36), in second-chance opportunities (13-9) and in fastbreak possessions (19-8).
NEXT UP: COLGATE
  • The Raiders will host BU in their final meeting of the season on Sunday (Feb. 21) with the ESPN+ broadcast set for 1 p.m.
  • Colgate has won all three meetings this year after sweeping BU at Case Gym in January.
