BOSTON – Contending against Holy Cross for the third time in a five-day span, the Boston University women's basketball team couldn't complete the season sweep as it fell, 60-52, Sunday afternoon at Case Gym.
The Terriers overcame an early 13-point deficit in the first quarter and led by as many as eight points in the second half. However, the Crusaders used 26 fast break points and limited BU to connect on just 3-of-16 from downtown to snap its five-game win streak.
Emily Esposito and
Sydney Johnson paced the Terriers with 12 points apiece.
Maren Durant just missed a double-double with 11 rebounds and nine points.
How It Happened
- Katie Nelson got the Terriers on the board with a corner 3-pointer, though Holy Cross responded with a 7-2 run to pull ahead, 11-5.
- Following a Johnson jumper, the Crusaders took advantage of turnovers and went on a 9-0 streak until Maggie Pina connected from beyond-the-arc to trim the deficit to 20-10 at the end of the first.
- Esposito was relentless to start the ensuing quarter, scoring eight of BU's first eight 10 points in the frame.
- Johnson finished in transition to cap a 14-2 run and give the Terriers their first lead, 24-22, with 4:47 left until halftime.
- BU shot 58.8 percent (10-17) in the quarter and limited Holy Cross to just three field goals as it entered the break with a 30-26 edge.
- Riley Childs and Durant went for back-to-back layup to start the second half, giving BU its largest lead at 34-26.
- The Crusaders shifted the momentum, using a 15-6 run to take a one-point advantage, 41-40, with 2:44 left in the third.
- Johnson played a hand in BU's final eight points of the frame as the Terriers reclaimed the upper hand, 45-42.
- BU fed Durant to start the fourth, as she put in three straight points, though the Crusaders also worked the block to regain control, 49-48, with 7:31 to play.
- Nelson and Durant helped the Terries tie it up for the fifth time, 52-52, with two minutes remaining.
- However, the Terriers turned the ball over on their next three possessions, allowing Holy Cross to take the lead seal the game.
Game Notes
- BU fell on its home floor for the first time in 10 games, a streak that dated back to last season.
- Sunday was also its first home loss in 400 days.
