WEST POINT, N.Y. – After overcoming a 22-point halftime deficit to tie the game with under eight seconds to play in regulation, the Boston University men's basketball team suffered a 57-55 heartbreaking defeat when Army's Alex King banked a long jumper off the glass before the buzzer on Sunday afternoon at Christl Arena.
With the loss, the Terriers (6-10, 6-10 PL) will be the seventh seed for the 2021 PenFed Credit Union Patriot League tournament and will host No. 10 Lehigh (4-10, 4-10 PL) Wednesday (March 3) at Case Gym with a 7 p.m. tip on ESPN+. Army (11-8, 7-7 PL) clinched the No. 4 seed along with a first-round bye.

Javante McCoy tallied 16 points and a career-tying nine rebounds, while junior
Walter Whyte recorded 13 points and 12 rebounds. Junior
Jonas Harper added three 3-pointers en route to 11 points, as BU finished the game 23-of-61 (.377) from the field and 7-of-19 (.368) in 3-point territory.
Honored before the game with six of his fellow seniors, King posted a game-high 19 points alongside six rebounds. One of three Black Knights to tally nine points, Lonnie Grayson had eight rebounds and five assists, while Nick Finke posted nine rebounds and five points.
THE FINAL MINUTES
- After Army went 1-of-2 from the line, Harper flushed a 3-pointer to put the deficit at 54-47 with 2:29 remaining.
- McCoy and Whyte hit back-to-back layups to pull within three at 31 seconds before calling timeout.
- Following the in-bounds, Harper intercepted a short pass and scored quickly to make the game, 54-53.
- Army then drew a foul with 20 seconds left and went 1-of-2 at the charity stripe.
- McCoy brought the ball up the court and drove to the hoop before scoring on his own missed layup for the first tie of the game, 55-55, with seven seconds remaining.
- The Black Knights called a timeout to set up King's last-second heroics, as BU was unable to get a quality look with 1.1 seconds remaining.
THE SETUP
- The Terriers missed their first 10 field goal attempts with Whyte scoring the first one at 12:44 to cut Army's lead to 11-3.
- The Black Knights outscored the Terriers off turnovers, 14-2, in the first half to grab a commanding 39-17 halftime lead.
- After BU missed a fastbreak layup attempt that would have cut the deficit to 12, Army finished on an 8-0 run with a pair of 3-pointers, including one by Grayson at the buzzer.
- Brittain-Watts and Harper started the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers to prompt an Army timeout.
- The Terriers continued to chip away at the double-digit deficit and finally pulled within nine (53-44) at 3:26 on Whyte's 3-pointer to set up the exciting finish.
GAME NOTES
- Whyte claimed his third double-double of the season and his 13th career.
- Following the weekend, McCoy has moved up No. 16 in the BU record book at 1,281 points and just needs eight more to reach No. 15 John Papale ('16).
- After reaching 500 points on Saturday, Mathon is now three away from 500 rebounds.
- The Terriers outscored Army off turnovers, 16-0, in the second half to tie the game after being down 22 at the half.
- BU also had a 30-20 advantage in points in the paint, but the Black Knights had a 9-2 lead in made free throws, as the Terriers attempted a season-low five shots at the charity stripe.
NEXT UP: Lehigh (Patriot League Tournament First Round)
- As the No. 7 seed, BU will host No. 10 Lehigh on Wednesday (March 3) with a 7 p.m. tip on ESPN+.
- Due to this year's condensed schedule, the Terriers and Mountain Hawks have yet to meet each other this season.
- This will be their third postseason matchup with No. 3 Lehigh eliminating No. 2 BU in the 2017 PL semifinals in double overtime and the No. 5 Terriers dispatching the No. 4 Mountain Hawks in the 2018 PL quarterfinals.
