HAMILTON, N.Y. – Despite senior
Javante McCoy posting a season-high 27 points and classmate
Sukhmail Mathon earning a double-double, the No. 7-seeded Boston University men's basketball team had its season ended at No. 2 Colgate, 77-69, in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Men's Basketball Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Finishing with 25 more free throw attempts, the Raiders (12-1) extended their win streak to 11 games and avenged last year's 64-61 PL championship loss to the Terriers (7-11), who went a perfect 14-of-14 at the charity stripe. Even though it was held five percentage points below its season average of 49.7 FG%, Colgate advances to Wednesday's home semifinal matchup against either No. 3 Lafayette or No. 6 Bucknell.
A 2021 All-Conference Second Team honoree, McCoy went 11-of-20 from the field to finish just three points shy of his personal best set against Loyola Maryland in a 2019 PL first round win. The All-Defensive Team member Mathon posted 14 points and hauled in a career-high 14 rebounds while adding a career-high four blocks for his fourth double-double of the season. All-PL Third Team member and junior
Walter Whyte was the third Terrier in double figures at 12 points.
Colgate's 2021 PL Player of the Year Jordan Burns overcome a 1-of-6 performance from behind the arc by hitting five of his six free throws to finish at 16 points, while adding six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Both Tucker Richardson and Jack Ferguson recorded 16 points apiece as well. Keegan Records posted 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks to help the Raiders win the battle at the boards, 41-37.
