Softball Edges Army in PL Tournament Opener, 5-4

BOSTON – After scoring four first-inning runs, the top-seeded Boston University softball team held off a late charge from No. 4 Army West Point in a gritty 5-4 victory during the opening round of the Patriot League tournament on Thursday afternoon.

With their 11th one-run win of the season, the Terriers (34-2) extend their win streak to 16 games and advance in the winner's bracket to a Friday morning matchup with No. 2 Lehigh at 11 a.m. The Mountain Hawks (17-14) held the Raiders (16-14-1) to just two hits in a 7-0 win, leading to Friday's elimination game between Colgate and the Black Knights (16-16) at 1:30 p.m.

Three-time PL Pitcher of the Year and senior Ali DuBois (23-0) collected five strikeouts in six innings of work to remain perfect on the season, while freshman Lauren Nett led the offense with a two-RBI single and RBI sac fly. Junior Emily Gant had an RBI single and run scored in the first inning before pitching the seventh for her second save of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Angelina Bebek led off the game with a triple for Army, but DuBois kept the Black Knights off the scoreboard with a strikeout and pair of fly outs, including a full-out diving catch from junior first baseman Nicole Amodio in foul territory.
  • Sophomore Caitlin Coker started the bottom half with a hit-by-pitch, stolen base and run scored on Gant's RBI single.
  • Senior Jen Horita followed Amodio's walk with an RBI single to set up Nett's two-RBI single down the left field line for the 4-0 advantage.
  • Horita almost extended the lead in the fourth by singling to right and taking second on a throwing error, but Army's Jolie Duong (9-3) ended the threat with a fly out.
  • Army threatened again in the fifth with a lead-off double from Taylor Drayton before BU earned a pair of ground outs and strike out to keep the 4-0 advantage.
  • The Black Knights though finally broke through in the sixth with their first six batters all reaching base on a single, walk, single, hit-by-pitch and back-to-back RBI singles to cut the deficit to 4-3.
  • Facing a bases load situation and zero outs, DuBois dug deep and with the help of her infield earned a pair of force outs at home thanks to senior shortstop Patricia Dun and then a ground out to Coker at third to keep the one-run lead.
  • BU added what proved to be the game-winning run in the sixth, as Amodio hit an infield single and freshman pinch-runner Kate Pryor advanced to third on two errors to set up Nett's RBI sac fly to center.
  • Army kept the game tight with a lead-off homer against Gant in the top of the seventh, but she earned a pair of pop ups and ground out to seal the 5-4 victory.
NEXT UP: Lehigh
  • The Terriers will face the Mountain Hawks on Friday at 11 a.m. with the winner advancing to Saturday's championship round.
  • The loser will face either Army or Colgate in an elimination game at 4 p.m. on Friday.
  • BU and Lehigh last faced off in the PL tournament in 2019 when the Terriers pulled out a 2-1 win to reach the championship round and followed up with a 14-7 come-from-behind victory in the title game.
