Superstitions are synonymous with softball. If something works, and you win, you keep it going.
The Terriers have plenty of superstitions, and riding the nation's second-longest win streak, they'll look to carry everything over into regionals.
LORD
Jen Horita: Easter Sunday, we had a game. This sounds so weird, but there was a fruit snack that fell on the ground. Me and coach
Ashley Obrest, we really like our fruit snacks, so I picked it up thinking
how could someone drop this on the ground, it's so rude. So, we took the little fruit snack in and stuck him on a pole in the dugout and we realized that he was giving us good luck, so we named him Lord because it was on Easter Sunday and he had basically risen from the ground.
Since then, we have kept him every weekend. He has been at every game on that little pole and we touch on him for good luck basically every inning. He will be coming to regionals with us.
MUNCHKINS
Marina Sylvestri: Coach started bringing a box of Munchkins before every game. She thinks it's good luck and that it helps us score a lot of runs. I don't know if it's an excuse just to eat them or whatever, but it's been pretty evident once she started bringing them that our runs scored have definitely tallied.
Ashley Waters: Against Lafayette, it was senior weekend, so we we're like ok we'll bring munchkins. I said
one time I ate Munchkins before a game and hit three home runs, so obviously I was like we're going to score a lot of runs. Then we scored a lot of runs and I'm like
oh my god, it was the Munchkins. You just convince yourself of these things.
The first couple times we brought them, 50 Munchkins went to zero within an inning or two. The championship game 50 Munchkins went to like 46. I think they're Munchkin'd out, but the fact that they were there was peace of mind.
SPECIAL SOCK
Caitlin Coker: I have the same pair of our white uniform socks. They kept getting holes in them, but I didn't want to ask for new ones because I was like if I change my socks and we start losing it's going to be my fault.
Lauren Keleher: She basically plays with a giant hole in one of her socks.
Ashley Waters: Her foot is basically out of her entire sock, her sock is nonexistent.
THE MORNING MOJO
Nicole Amodio: Everyone gets the same breakfast and same coffee, that's a big one for us. Me,
Audrey Sellers and Jen will walk together and get Dunkin'. If someone has a bad game and wants to switch up their mojo, they'll get a different coffee. You have to keep your breakfast and coffee the same if you're doing good.
Marina Sylvestri: I have to have the same coffee order from Starbucks before every game - matcha latte with soy milk, I can't change it. My batting average started going up ever since I did that so that's why I kept that one.
Lauren Keleher: I have to eat a maple frosted donut with sprinkles from Dunkin' Donuts with a large coffee before every game.
Raegan Kelly: I have to get Mary Lou's before every game.
LIZZIE LOCATION
Caitlin Coker: Lizzie Avery always has to stand next to Coach when reading the lineup card. I've bought into it. We keep winning so I'm not going to mess anything up.
Ashley Waters: Lizzie
has to stand in the same spot every pre and postgame huddle. She took that role and took it on.
GATEKEEPER
Jen Horita: The two previous days of the championship series, the second gate had been open, and we had always been going through the second gate because that was the only one that was open. For whatever reason on Saturday the first gate was the one that was open. Obviously, at the time it was the only gate that was open, so I went through that gate. But then Coach said that she noticed and that she had
Jill Cardella open the second one so that she could go through it. Once I realized that it was open, I went back out through the gate I came in through, and then came in through the second gate just to keep it all the same.
THE LOOK
Lauren Keleher: I have to put my uniform on a certain way – left sock, right sock, sliding shorts, shirt, then pants.
Raegan Kelly: I always wear my hair the same way with a bow and I wear two lucky bracelets.
Jen Horita: I put my socks and shoes on in a particular order.
Ashley Waters: I wash my sneakers before every weekend. I wear my eye makeup the same way. My eye makeup was different this year and then we lost Army, so I changed my eye makeup. I wear the same outfits every weekend and lay them out the night before the same way. I get dressed the same way. I usually curl the bottom of my hair, but since I left my curling iron at Lehigh, I just left it straight and since we were really successful I just left it straight.
