STILLWATER, Okla. – In a battle of conference champions, the Patriot League's Boston University softball team had its season ended by the Big South's Campbell University, 7-1, on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Regionals hosted by Oklahoma State.
Scoring its first five runs in the fourth with the help of four walks and a costly error, the Camels improve to 28-18, as the Terriers (36-4) dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman Lauren Nett put the Terriers on the scoreboard first with a two-out liner down left field for the early 1-0 advantage.
- Senior Ali DuBois owned five strikeouts against two walks through the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth.
- Campbell earned a pair of walks in the fourth and then hit a hard single up the middle to tie the game.
- After DuBois loaded the bases with her third walk, junior Emily Gant entered the circle but ran into trouble herself with a RBI infield single and walk, prompting the return of DuBois.
- The Camels extended the lead to 5-1 with the help of an error and RBI single.
- BU threatened in the bottom of the sixth with one-out singles by freshman Lauren Keleher and senior Jen Horita but stranded them at the corners.
- Campbell added two more unearned runs in the seventh to prevent any chance of a rally against sophomore Allison Boaz.
GAME NOTES
- Nett became the ninth Terrier to hit a homer this season, as BU went yard for the first time in 10 games, last accomplishing the feat against Holy Cross on April 24.
- Horita and Keleher led the offense with 2-for-3 days at the plate.
- DuBois will have to wait until next spring for another opportunity to break the BU record for all-time wins, as she's currently tied with Cassidi Hardy ('10) at 85 victories.
- BU finished its season with a .900 win percentage, its highest mark in program history.
- The senior class closed out their four-year era in Boston with a 126-52 (.708) record.
- Making their 11th overall NCAA appearance, the Terriers fell to 7-22 all-time in the double-elimination tournament.
- Campbell improved to 3-0 all-time in the series, as the teams met for the first time since a regular season match-up in 2003.
