RIGA, Latvia - Rising sophomore Drew Commesso and former Terrier standouts Adam Clendening and Jake Oettinger are returning home with bronze medals after helping Team USA finish third at the 2021 IIFH World Championship in Latvia.
Team USA rolled past Germany, 6-1, in Sunday's bronze-medal game after falling to eventual champion Canada in the semifinals. It marked the fourth time in eight years that the U.S. squad earned a medal at the tournament. The last Terriers to collect World Championship medals were Nick Bonino and Charlie McAvoy in 2018 (bronze).
Clendening finished tied for sixth on the team in points with five on two goals and three assists and had a plus-5 rating. Both of his goals were game-winners and he led all U.S. defensemen in points per game (0.72).
Oettinger won all three of his starts in the tournament, posting a 1.37 goals-against average and a .934 save percentage. Commesso was a late addition to the team but did not see any time in goal.
Team USA finished atop Group B in preliminary play, going 6-1 by reeling off six straight victories after a loss to Finland in its opener. The American squad topped Slokakia in the quarterfinals by a score of 6-1 before a 4-2 loss to Canada. The U.S. topped Canada, 5-1, during group play.
