BOSTON - Incoming freshman Tyler Boucher of the Boston University men's ice hockey team was selected 10th overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2021 NHL Draft, which was held virtually on Friday night.
Boucher became the 21st Terrier to be chosen in the first round of the NHL Draft. BU has boasted 11 first-round picks in the last six years, including five in the top 10. Boucher was the first Hockey East player to be chosen on Friday.
"Our entire coaching staff is thrilled for Tyler that he was selected 10th overall by Ottawa," head coach Albie O'Connell said. "We look forward to having him make an impact on our team this year and we are excited to help him develop as a person and as a player."
A native of Haddonfield, New Jersey, Boucher spent the past two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program. The 6-0, 200-pound right winger skated in 12 games with the U18 squad in 2020-21, scoring six goals and adding five assists for 11 points.
"For us, he's a power forward," Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said when he addressed the media on Friday. "He's a guy with great speed and uses his body. One of the things he does well is his ability to finish and score goals from outside the dots but also close to the net and inside the paint."
Boucher is the third Terrier to be selected by Ottawa in the first round, joining Brady Tkachuk (4th overall, 2018) and Shane Bowers (28th overall, 2017).
Rounds 2-7 of the NHL Draft will be held on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
